Chinese city urges those 'poisoned by extremism' to surrender
Authorities in Xinjiang's Hami city say those who turn themselves in and confess to 'crimes' will be treated leniently.

A city in China's far-western Xinjiang region has ordered people who are "poisoned by extremism, terrorism and separatism", in contact with overseas terror groups or behaving in a "conservative" Islamic manner, to turn themselves in.

Those who surrender to authorities within 30 days and confess to their crimes will be treated leniently and might avoid punishment, Hami's official social media account said.

Beijing has in recent months faced an outcry from activists, academics and foreign governments over mass arrests and strict surveillance of the Muslim Uighur and other ethnic minorities living in Xinjiang.

China rejects the criticism saying it protects the religion and culture of minorities and the security measures are needed to combat the influence of "extremist" groups that incite violence in the region.

"All individuals involved in terrorist crimes and poisoned by the 'three evil forces' are urged to surrender themselves to the judicial organs within 30 days and to confess and hand over the facts of your crime," said the Hami city notice.

China's Uighurs: State defends internment camps
Focus on Muslims
The message said actions ranging from being in contact with overseas "terror" groups to conservative Islamic behaviour should prompt individuals to surrender themselves.

Advocating that people live their lives in accordance with the Quran, stopping other people from watching television, or banning alcohol, smoking and dancing at weddings are listed as behaviours that should warrant informing the authorities.

The list also included openly destroying, rejecting or thwarting the government identification system, as well as rejecting housing provided by the state.

Those who turn themselves in within 30 days will be treated leniently. And if the information provides a significant clue, they might avoid all punishments, the notice said.

In August, a United Nations human rights panel said it had received many credible reports that one million or more Uighurs and other minorities are being held in what resembled a "massive internment camp that is shrouded in secrecy" in Xinjiang.

China says it is not enforcing arbitrary detention and political re-education.

Aside from the mass arrests, rights groups also say the Chinese government has significantly raised limitations on everyday religious observances in the region.

Last month, the capital Urumqi launched a campaign against halal products, such as food and toothpaste, which are produced according to Islamic law, to prevent what it sees as the incursion of Islam into secular life.

. . .
Few days back the Chinese govt. claimed that it respected freedom of religion which was followed by decision to ban halal food. Actually by the term extremism or terrorism Xi wants to refer to Islam or else we wouldn't see this intolerance towards halal food. If this trend of vilifying Islam continues in China the drive for independence in Xinjiang will gain legitimacy among China's Muslim population and the world in general and for right reason.

Hami city looked like i was in northern pakistan or tajikistan but stuck in past i liked the simple people.

Chinese citizens from accross china come to see the culture and beauty of xinjiang in that city.

But to my surprise hami city has majority han people since very long time. It came as a train (railway) stop on my way to beijing from urumqi.

I would very much love to visit china again soon. Once i find time and money for it. God willing. Id like to visit the south this time though.

I don't need to be in Xinjiang to get the news. I think the western nations are doing a fine job of exposing what has been going on in Xinjiang in the name of fighting 'terror'. I expect to get more news of it from the Indian members of PDF. You see I never thought that I would join the Indians in bashing China but I think that day has arrived.

Are u crazy? Banning halal food in china? Do u know how much big halal food industry is in china? Chinese halal food is used all over china everyone prefers it why cuz it says and true is 清真 cleanest and purist of all food!

Its also exported to central asian countries and now pakistan too. Halal food is too big an industry to ban in china.

Also more than 800 years ago i gorgot the exact date mongols captured north east china and tried to make jews and muslims leave halal food. They saw the biggest mutiny and were scared shitless by combined forces of jews and muslim forces . but then they succeeded sadly because of military might. But then han Chinese came on board and north east was taken back.

Halal food is part of chinese culture . china has cultural preservation ministries and institutes before the west or before other muslim countries chinese themselves won't let that happen.

U should seriously visit china and xinjiang in perticular :)

It can be an eye opener it sure was for me.

Nah my friend think over it logically . go to a neautral source dont trust chinese or pakistani side look at xinjiang news from russia or central asia they are more closely connected. But visiting urself or talkikg to people who actually lived there or are living there is much more easily.

Talk to bangladeshi students studing in xinjiang :) that should be easy for u.

They will give u unbiased story

Is this a threatening? Keep in patience. After cleaning those terrorists rats, we can return you a pure Chinese muslim cummunity. Maybe the whole world in future will learn from China how to solve this problem.
