SEOUL, South Korea — The captain of a Chinese fishing vessel was killed Friday following a fight with South Korean coast guard officers who stopped his ship for suspected illegal fishing activities, officials said.

A South Korean guardsman shot the man in the stomach with a handgun after he violently resisted inspections in the waters off South Korea’s western coast, said coast guard official Kim Hye-gyeong.

The 45-year-old Chinese national was airlifted to a hospital and pronounced dead about 30 minutes later, according to officials at the Mokpo Hankook Hospital. The hospital did not immediately announce the exact cause of death.

The deadly fight occurred as a dozen South Korean coast guard officers boarded the Chinese ship for searches in South Korea’s exclusive economic zone, which extends 200 nautical miles (370 km) from shore. When other Chinese fishing ships pulled nearby and sent their crew members aboard the ship being inspected, the Chinese captain began resisting more violently, which led to his shooting death, according to South Korean coast guard officer Cho Nam-yong.

It wasn’t immediately known whether there were other injuries.

Chinese fishing boats have been going farther afield to feed growing domestic demand for seafood as catches have decreased in waters close to China’s shores. South Korea’s coast seized about 220 Chinese ships last year for illegal fishing in the Yellow Sea.

In 2011, one South Korean coast guard officer was killed in a clash with Chinese fishermen in South Korean waters.

Chinese fishermen are very notorious in their catching~
If those South Korea were not vigilant in protecting their EEZ, I bet the korean side of yellow sea will already be depleted by the Chinese fishermen.

You can see from the satellite images~ all those Chinese boats lining up surrounding the South Korean EEZ, ready to plunder everything that came near the border. Scary indeed.

In South east asia where naval capabilities of each nations are inadequate, those Chinese fishermen have roamed and plundered everything, causing detrimental effect to the livelihood of Southeast asian traditional fishermen with less advanced catchment technology.

That flag is made in China, keep burning keep buying. When is Vietnam thinking of burning Chinese flag again? Cause we might have a sale on flags a little bit later. Do you also want figurines of Xi and all the top leaders to smash? We also have that.

So what is the PRC stand for this? This can become interesting. A conflict that happen when the government needs South Korea as friend the most.

Comrade Kim Jong-Un will likely shell South Korea again in the coming months.

It demanded a proper response from South Korea, urging an investigation and a full report to the Embassy in due course.

A Chinese fisherman of an 80-tonne vessel was shot dead by the South Korean coast guard while fishing in waters some 144 kilometers west of South Korea's North Jeolla Province on Friday morning, Xinhua reported, citing Yonhap News Agency.

The entire width of the yellow sea is roughly about 200-300nm. There is a huge overlap of EEZ between China and S.Korea, and both side are still in talks over the demarcation line.

They shouldn't have shot the poor man in the stomach, however. They could have merely stunned him.

Anyways, Rest In Peace to the fallen Chinese captain.

He was probably a father , husband...

Coast guard should use non lethal weapons like tasers and rubber coated clubs. Shotgun blast to the belly is death sentence for sure.

These Koreans are audacious and vicious.

Yes, I agree. Deadly force should only be used if they're shooting back. But from the report of this article, the Chinese captain was trying to resist, not firing a weapon.

A fisheries accord between South Korea and China is , indeed, necessary. But sometimes, it is natural when fisherfolk accidentally go inside the maritime borders of some states. I mean, this happens regularly even by Japanese fishermen going into Korean , or Taiwanese, or Russian waters. A simple warning should suffice, a water cannon shot here or there. There is no need to use deadly force. What South Korean Coast Guard need to do is be realistic in their responses.

I find it odd. They could not even rescue the majority of the Korean school children in that terribly ferry sinking early this year. Hundreds of Korean kids drowned in the depths, where were there Korean coast guard? Why did they not respond in earnest?

Yet they can use deadly force on a Chinese fishing boat? Come on.
