US says China's Baidu is notorious pirated goods market

The US Trade Representative (USTR) accused Baidu of steering consumers to third-party websites that sell goods illegally.

Baidu is the most-visited website in China and among the top 10 in the world, USTR said.

Critics accuse China of not protecting intellectual property rights.

Baidu's spokesperson Kaiser Kou declined to comment when contacted by the BBC.

Hurting business
In its report, the USTR also highlighted what it said were illegal sales through retail outlets and Chinese markets.

"Industry reports that personal computer malls throughout China, such as Hailong Mall in Beijing and Yangpu Yigai digital square in Shanghai, sell computers with illegal operating software and other unlawfully pre-installed software," it said.

The USTR said that the production and sales of counterfeit goods were detrimental to the growth and success of businesses across the globe.

"Piracy and counterfeiting undermine the innovation and creativity that is vital to our global competitiveness," said USTR's Ron Kirk, who is President Barack Obama's principal trade advisor.

"These notorious markets not only hurt American workers and businesses, but are threats to entrepreneurs and industries around the world," he added.

In its bid to protect Amercian businesses against piracy, the US Chamber of Commerce has urged the government to block foreign websites that sell illegal goods from operating in the US.

.
What did mean? when saying : Baidu of steering consumers to third-party websites that sell goods illegally.
Do they come up in search results? or that they are advertised as say sponsored links.

.
Hmm so the U.S. government is asking Baidu to practice self-censorship and delete websites failing to meet their standard of IP protection from its search results?

Only for criminal websites. I'm surprised. Usually china is extremely strict on criminals.

and delete websites failing to meet their standard of IP protection from its search results?

Does China has any IP protection laws? BTW, China has been asked to follow the INTERNATIONAL Law, and not US laws.

I can list you the illegals that US is doing online..

lets forget baidu, lets talk about ebay.com US and that biggest illegal stuff being sold..

@jbond197 don't forget to mention youtube :) wait more specific ebay.in india

Debating this in a reasonable way, I find it quite silly that the US government of all people is pushing this thru considering the financing of Bidu is done via the Nasdaq thru an ADR program by BONY or JPM, there is no stock listed on the local exchange and some of the major shareholders are US based hedge funds..

BIDU: BAIDU INC Institutional Ownership

So the American baksbrought Bidu over to be funded by Western funds and now they're government is saying the business model does not check out? Go figure

Coincidently we're thinking of investing hence the above came in handy :D I'll see if the share price gets impacted when market opens.

Baidu pronounced correctly as buy-do I think by lovely american.
Baidu just a search engine for website not as ebay or something on web selling goods.

Oh really? Last time I checked Google still links to Rapidshare and *********, both of them happened to be based in Western countries and host millions of illegal files. Or are Chinese companies the only ones who need to confirm your little "international law"?

Here is ebay's policy about counterfiet/Pirated products
Replicas, counterfeit items, and unauthorized copies policy

youtube has its own set of anti piracy procedures but nothing suggests that they (Youtube, Ebay) are promoting piracy in any sense in comparision to some thing like this

US says China's Baidu, Taobao markets for piracy - CBS News

Care to tell me which parts of the article implies Baidu or Alibaba are 'promoting piracy'? All it said is Baidu's search services links to websites that sell counterfeits and someone are using Taobao (which is an open platform) to sell pirated goods. I fail to see how that's in any sense different from what's happening with Google or eBay, one of which has ample links to pirated files and another has plenty of counterfeits listed.

wow what a load of BULL

you can find anything for free on the internet. doesn't matter if it's baidu or google or anything else.
