China's biggest airlines will not pay a new European Union tax aimed at cutting carbon emissions, their trade body has said.

On 1 January, the EU brought airlines under its Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), which levies a charge on flights based on their carbon emissions. Chai Haibo of the China Air Transport Association said that its members would not co-operate with the ETS.
However, the EU said it would not back down if the airlines refused to comply.

DisputeThe China Air Transport Association (CATA) represents companies including Air China, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and Hainan Airlines.

Airlines which do not comply with the new EU tax can be fined and even prohibited from flying into the region.
Last year, it was claimed the plan could cost Chinese airlines 95m euros ($124m, £79m) in extra annual costs.

why not tax the EU airlines in china, i think tht will be much more tax than EU getting taxes from the chinese airlines

.
I am not sure, but it could be like,

China has no framework in taxation of carbon emission. But if their airlines are barred from flying EU, they could do the conterback based on their airlines are barred per se, by some WTO or Internatinal law clause....

.
This carbon tax being imposed on airlines does more harm than good.

.
EU is money hungry now..try to catch as many fish as they can by taxing countries now or their companies....:smokin:

.
Meh let the chinese get banned from EU, but it will only result in butthurt to EU.

People should note that these taxes are also being applied on North American and Indian based airlines. All of whom oppose this retarded law. Even IATA opposes this.

Speaking to the BBC, Tony Tyler, director general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), said: "The money being raised through this measure, along with all the money being raised by other taxes that are imposed on the industry in the name of the environment, none of it gets spent on anything that's going to reduce emissions."

The International Air Transport Association has said the European Union should negotiate through the International Civil Aviation Organization to reach a global agreement on the issue.

IATA, which represents about 240 airlines comprising 84 percent of global air traffic, estimates the new emissions rules will cost airlines up to 900 million euros ($1.17 billion) this year and rise to 2.8 billion euros in 2020.

“Unilateral, extra-territorial and market distorting initiatives such as the EU emissions trading scheme are not the way forward,” IATA said last month.

The tax has been criticised by China, India, the US and Canada.

In December, the US lost its attempt to have the issue of the new airline tax blocked by the European Court of Justice.

The US had argued that its carriers were set to lose out heavily, and that the charges violate climate change and aviation pacts.

It is easy, let's just tit for tat. We tax them as well to make it even.

Bunch of white robbers. To hell with Europe. European killed off many native culture and people, take 3 continents for themselve, pollute the whole envorinment, and now using this scheme to tax poor developing countries.

.
Highly unlikely, China is a major business and tourism destination and I highly doubt the EU would do something as cut flights because of a Carbon Tax thing.
