‘Chinese acting like Nazis’

TOKYO:
President Benigno Aquino 3rd on Wednesday likened present-day China to Nazi Germany during a speech in Japan, hinting the world cannot continue to appease Beijing as it claims ever-more territory in the South China Sea (West Philippine Sea). The comments come as disquiet grows over the quickening pace of China’s land reclamation program in international waters, including its construction of a runway long enough for large military planes.

“If there was a vacuum, if the United States, which is the superpower, says, ‘We are not interested,’ perhaps there is no brake to ambitions of other countries,” Aquino told an audience of business leaders in Tokyo when asked about China’s rising might and the role of the US in checking it.

“I’m an amateur student of history and I’m reminded of… how Germany was testing the waters and what the response was by various other European powers,” he said, referring to the Nazis’ territorial conquests in the months before the outbreak of World War II.

“They tested the waters and they were ready to back down if, for instance, in that aspect, France said [to back down].

“But unfortunately, up to the annexation of the Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia, the annexation of the entire country of Czechoslovakia, nobody said stop.

“If somebody said stop to [Adolf] Hitler at that point in time, or to Germany at [the] time, we would have avoided World War II.”

Aquino, who is in Japan on a four-day visit, previously made similar comments comparing China’s actions with those of the Third Reich.

“At what point do you say, ‘Enough is enough?’ Well, the world has to say it – remember that the Sudetenland was given in an attempt to appease Hitler to prevent World War II,” he told the New York Times last year.

That provoked fury in Beijing, which labeled the Philippine President “amateurish,” “ignorant” and “lame.”

Aquino’s comments on Wednesday came after US President Barack Obama this week weighed in on the growing tensions in the South China Sea, urging regional powers — particularly China — to respect the law and stop “throwing elbows.”

China has rejected US demands to stop all reclamation works in the South China Sea, saying it was exercising its sovereignty and using the outposts to fulfill international responsibilities.

Beijing insists that it has sovereignty over nearly all of the South China Sea, a major global shipping route believed to be home to oil and gas reserves, but rival claimants accuse it of expansionism.

Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Taiwan also have varied claims over islets and reefs in the area.

Despite its relatively weak economy and the poor state of its military, the Philippines has been the most vocal country in the region in its criticism of China.

The Association for Southeast Asian Nations (Asean), a 10-strong regional bloc, has struggled to come to a consensus, with China exploiting divisions and exercising its economic might.

Washington and its Asian allies, including Tokyo, which has separate territorial dispute with Beijing in the East China Sea, have warned that ignoring international laws could threaten “the freedom of navigation.”

The Chinese military last month ordered a US Navy P-8 Poseidon surveillance plane to leave an area near the disputed Spratly islands in the South China Sea. But the American aircraft ignored the demand and said it was flying in what US officials consider international airspace.

Aquino is not the first global leader to make comparisons between East Asia’s present situation and global conflicts of last century.

Early last year, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe caused controversy by appearing to suggest Tokyo and Beijing were analogous to Britain and Germany on the eve of World War I.

The Japanese government later played down the comments, which were widely reported, blaming a translator.

Rethink reclamation
Speaking to Japanese reporters, Aquino asked China to “reexamine” its reclamation efforts in the South China Sea, saying such action raises tensions in disputed territories there.

He reiterated that China’s action violates the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea, which prohibits moves that could stir tensions and change the status quo in the contested areas.

“[These] reclamation effort seem to go against both the letter of this agreement entered into, as well as the spirit of the law. We reiterate, we ask China: Is this a necessary step?” Aquino said.

“And if stability is a necessary prerequisite to prosperity for all, and if prosperity for all our peoples is the be-all and end-all of any government, then perhaps they should reexamine all of these efforts and see whether or not this is necessary given the increasing tensions that are happening because of these activities,” he added.

The President said maintaining an open sea lane in the South China Sea is very important to continued regional growth.

“In the sea known by many names, estimated by some to facilitate the travel of about 40 percent of world trade, Japan has been steadfast in demonstrating its solidarity with the Philippines as we advocate freedom of navigation and the rule of law in the face of China’s unlawful territorial claim,” Aquino noted.

“We are united in the belief that the continued growth of Asia necessitates an environment where freedom of navigation is uninterrupted, and where the rule of law is respected by all, with no exception,” he said.

Aquino reiterated the Philippines’ desire to resolve the issue in a peaceful manner. He thanked Japan for supporting Manila’s peaceful, lawful and principled approach in resolving the dispute.

a lot of Chinese wish the Chinese government acts like "Nazis"
indeed, Chinese government acts like angel internationally,
those Chinese are very disappointed with their government

.
Now the question is, is the Philippines France? Or Poland? Either way, they both got rolled over when push came to shove.

. .
If Mr. Aquino thinks this is the case, he must also be aware of a Final Solution prepared for ... his Type :)

. . .
As far as international diplomacy practice and discourse is concerned, this is a very uneducated and uncivil speech from the top official of a country.

Mr. Aquino must find ways to put his ideas more eloquently, because, he started with Nazi and will repeat it few more times, but then, down further, to be able to agitate , he will be required to find an even more radical and extreme insult.

This is only a slippery slope for him because his rhetoric won't be responded by a no higher official in China than a spokesperson.

And, talking about 1940s Nazism and fascism in Japan is less than brilliant. I would hesitate if I were a Japanese official to clap or simply keep silent.

Even the VCP is much more diplomatic and cool headed. We had one crazy agitator and empty talker, Mr. Erdoghan of Turkey, and we have just got another one. Mr. Aquino just lessened his weight and made himself look like a crazy televangelist. Hallelujah!

.
Lol if Chinese really were actually acting like the Nazi Germans, we'd simply outright invade the Philippines and throw all the Pinoys into concentration camps and exterminate you guys in gas chambers because you are inferior. China today does not represent any ideology or Yellow supremacist attitudes, unlike those that defined the German's during their Nazi days. Saying China is 'acting like Nazi's' over what is happening in SCS is not only disingenuous, but reveals the shady and conniving nature of the Filipino president Benigno Aquino. Yes, the Philippines as a nation is hopelessly weak and incompetent, but don't for one second think anyone should feel sorry for you when you go out of your way to antagonize your much bigger neighbor.

Chinese authorities say they are shocked and strongly dissatisfied with the remarks of Philippine President Benigno Aquino, who compared China to Nazi Germany while making a speech in Japan.

Aquino was commenting on the two countries' territorial disputes in the South China Sea when he made the unflattering comparison, and called on the United States to play a role in stopping China's rising might.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying asserts the Philippines is colluding with countries from outside the region and smearing China for its own interests.

"I have also noticed these reports. I am deeply shocked at the absurd and unreasonable remarks by the Philippine leader and express my strong dissatisfaction and opposition. A review of the unfolding of the South China Sea disputes tells us it is the Philippines that has been illegally occupying some islets of China's Nansha Islands by force since the 1990s."

Aquino is currently on a visit to Japan.

He is expected to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe later on today, with the topic of the South China Sea reportedly on the table.

Hua Chunying warns the Philippines to stop its provocations and go back to the right track of negotiation and consultation.

Hua also commented on recent remarks from the United States and Japan, which accuse China of violating international law with its island-building activities in the South China Sea.

"What international law forbids China to conduct reasonable construction on its own islands and reefs? What law allows close reconnaissance by warships and planes of another country's islands and reefs? What law allows the infringement of sovereignty and legitimate rights and interests in the name of freedom of navigation?"

US President Barack Obama said on Monday that China should not be "throwing elbows" in the region, while Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga also said China should abide by international norms.

Hua added that there comment are double-standard and are made with ulterior motives.

Nazi though has no good reputation but it is really a symbol of power so the long time weak one to be called Nazi not a bad thing.
As I know Benigno Aquino 3rd has Chinese origin so he must hope China to be a strong nation and proudly to call it Nazi.

Look. I told you.

Good diplomatic performance by Chinese spokeswoman.

I hope President Aquino realizes that the Philippines is also doing its fair share of reclamations.

. .
:rofl::rofl: These Pinoys have been dominated by Spanish and American for over centuries...even they're now totally assimilate by carriing spanish name such "Aquino" instead of using asian name given by their ancestors....what a shamefull people...LMAO when white Nazis people have subjugated them for over centuries, they have nothing to complain but they dare to call Chinese Nazis when themself steal reefs and islands from us? Thief is yelling for thief.

.
Very immature statement from a leader at international stage
If he make that comment in his own country for internal consumption only, i still can understand :sarcastic:
But i suppose some Filipino felt very disappointed because of this type of quality leader :coffee:
