After five years on the waiting list, Wang Wancheng finally boarded a chartered flight from China to Saudi Arabia on Tuesday night for the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.

Wang, a 60-year-old Muslim who runs a small business in Northwest China's Gansu province, applied for a seat on the aircraft arranged by the China Islamic Association as early as 2007, when he was able to afford the 35,000 yuan ($5,550) trip.

He said he was overwhelmed by joy that he can join 299 others from Gansu's Dongxiang to perform the hajj in Mecca this year.

In his village, it is certainly breaking news, and residents held a farewell party on Sunday before he headed for Lanzhou, the provincial capital, where the chartered plane took off.

After about a 10-hour flight, the group of 332 Muslims is expected to land in Medina, 427 kilometers north of Mecca in Saudi Arabia, on early Wednesday (Beijing time). In Medina, the pilgrims will first visit the Prophet's Mosque before heading to Mecca for the hajj.

The China Islamic Association planned 82 chartered flights this year to send more than 13,800 Chinese Muslims to Saudi Arabia for the annual pilgrimage. The aircraft taking Wang is the first flight this year, and everyone taking the flights is expected to arrive in Mecca by Oct 18.

The chartered flights organized by the association will take off in the coming few days from cities populated by large numbers of Muslims.

Currently, more than 23 million Muslims call China home. Islam entered the country around 1,300 years ago.

The number of Chinese Muslims taking the trip is increasing every year as incomes rise, said Guo Chengzhen, the association's vice-president. "Only about 1,000 people went to the holy city in 1989 when the association first organized chartered flights for the pilgrimage."

Muslims who are healthy and wealthy enough to go on the 38-day trip are required to apply to the local branches of the association first.

But there is a long waiting list in provinces and regions in western China with large Muslim populations, and some may have to wait for years, Guo said. "In some coastal regions without such a large number of Muslims, applicants may be able to go just one year after submitting their applications or even sooner."

Among the 13,800 Chinese pilgrims this year, about 3,200 are from the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region - the largest group of all.

Besides organizing the trip, the association also takes care of the Chinese pilgrims during the physically demanding journey.

There will be a special medical team including 52 doctors and paramedics to go with the pilgrims, whose average age is 62. "We require staff members who are there to assist the pilgrims carrying medications for heart attacks at any time," Guo said.

From assigning imams who will guide the pilgrims during the hajj, to making ID cards with Chinese flags and contact details, the association's services are worked out to every detail. "We almost have contingency plans for everything. We have to prepare enough ice just in case the air conditioning in the tents doesn't work during the heat in Mecca," he said.

The association organized several training sessions in China, from introducing procedures during the hajj to knowledge of basic international traveling, as some of the Muslims may have never set foot outside their villages before.

5 years on the waiting list? In our countries if you can afford it- you hop on a plane if KSA gives you the visa, if you can't?-in some countries they help you out.

Is this like the waiting list in China to go to a mosque? where the govt bans anyone under 18 from praying in mosques?

.
what is the cap by ccp on the number of muslims allowed to visit the mecca per year?

Saudi Arabia can only host certain number of pilgrims and allocate quota to every country. Hosting 2.5million (2011) their living, eating, transport are not an easy feat. And quota is not specific to China. Although every country may allow certain numbers based on logistical and other capabilities. Fact, that number of people going to hajj from China increasing is good sign. Hope more can afford and able to perform their life long dream and duty. But your tone sure reflects you are looking some sort of fault.

You sure don't know what you are talking about. During Hajj season every country has number of quota. But for year round Umrah Hajj anyone who can afford and has visa can go, there is no quota. Same goes for Chinese Muslims as well.

And before insulting other about age restriction of prayers, I would suggest you indians present some proof or get civilized.

I did not know about the quota- although not sure why it took someone 5 year to go ( oh well). But I do know that every Muslim under 18 is not allowed to go to pray at any mosque. Perhaps you don't mind that because your are a fan of the boy band called China? Maybe you are such a great purveyor of all things Islam on this site- you were too busy to know that people under 18 are not allowed in Mosques?

Muslims are banned from fasting during Ramadan in China ( Muslims are banned from fasting during Ramadan in China)
Chinese Muslim officials as well as students under the age of 18 in the restive northwestern region of Xinjiang are not allowed to fast during the holy month of Ramadan, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

In a bid to clamp down on religious extremism, Communist Party leaders posted guidance on numerous government websites restricting Muslim religious activities, including fasting and visiting mosques, the UAE-based newspaper, The National reported.

Al Arabia news- that must be biggest joke. Anw who was the repoter another indian? I have met many Chinese Muslims in New york and they never mentioned any restriction about prayers. Although they mentioned political and rights issue. Fasting report is so bogus because during Ramada/EID Chinese authorities increaded supply of meat in Muslim dominated regions so they can have good supply in less expansive. Chinese authorities blocked the road to accomodate EID prayers for Muslims and hosted reception for Muslims. That is not to say Muslims dont face issues in China. But Muslims face even worse in india and else where. You obiviously fromed your opnion through tainted report.

Check the names in Kerala. You will find the same. I dont think any Arabic influence or compulsion exists.

Short of your mad mullah telling you that China bans all under 18yrs from visiting mosques I doubt you will believe it. You even blame Muslim publications as being in cohorts with Jews a/Christians/Hindus against your beloved China. Although- when it comes to personal choices you sure like living in a christian /Judea country ( that's if your location stated is correct) :) I doubt even if the prophet came and told you this was true , you would believe it. Why not ask them directly if Muslims under 18 can enter a mosque...

I wonder whether you even bothered reading the article you have posted. It says the restriction applies to officials and students. I don't know if you even heard seperation of state and religion. If you are on government's payroll and a public servant, skipping work for some religious reason is not acceptable, and this goes to any employers who don't take religion serious. If you are a muslin then you do have a choice of quitting job if you really want to attend. As for students, their first priority is to attend classes, not some religious fast. So for every other Muslins, they are allowed to attend this fast anyway they want. So what is your point?

So you don't want us or me to reply ( since you deleted my last reply) with facts from the articles posted. Posting facts in the form of quotes earns your disapproval? just asking...
