The launcher will use three core stages, each of which is as large as China's biggest current rocket.

Chinese rocket designers have said the country's new rocket for sending astronauts to the moon could be ready for a test flight in 2027.

A scaled-down version of the new rocket, referred to as the next-generation crew launch vehicle, is on display at the ongoing 14th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition, or Zhuhai Airshow, in southern China.

The launch vehicle will be 295 feet (90 meters) tall and have a mass at takeoff of 463,000 pounds (210,000 kilograms). It will be capable of launching 59,500 pounds (27,000 kilograms) into lunar transfer orbit. It also features a launch escape system on top of its payload fairing.

"Our current largest carrier rocket, the Long March 5, can launch 8.2 tons into the Earth-to-moon transfer orbit. We need 27 tons to land on the moon. We are working to increase the width and thrust of our current rockets," Liu Bing, deputy director designer of Long March 5B at CALT, told CCTV(opens in new tab) in Zhuhai.

Two launches of the rocket could be used for a short-term crewed lunar landing mission, Long Lehao, a veteran Long March rocket designer at the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT), said in June 2021, according to SpaceNews(opens in new tab).

The rocket is expected to make its first test flight in 2027, Zhao Xinguo, another CALT official present at the airshow, told CCTV.

The launcher has yet to be named, but is sometimes referred to unofficially as the Long March 5G, Long March 5DY (DY standing for "dengyue," or moon landing), or the 921 rocket.

A two-stage, single core version of the rocket is also being developed and will launch before the full-size variant. The smaller version could carry a new generation crew spacecraft — which had an uncrewed test flight in 2021 — to China's newly constructed Tiangong space station in Earth orbit.

It is unclear if Zhao was referring to the lunar or low Earth orbit version of the rocket regarding the 2027 test flight. Chinese officials have said that the low Earth orbit variant is slated for a first flight in 2026.

Wang Xiaojun, president of CALT, said in February this year that the first stage of the new rocket will be reusable.

US has all the blueprint and detail design for Apollo. Why she still cannot put man into moon?

China will be the first country to establish a permanent base on the moon.

Why do you think we can't put a man on the moon?

Plus there are plenty of pictures of the SaturnV around. Considering China's track record we'll likely be seeing a replica of it launched from China someday.

Budget reasons and budget cuts by Congress decades ago on NASA who view the Moon as not worth the investment. Blueprints and equipment from decades ago doesn't apply right now since the designs are different, especially one that was temporary landing and not designed for permanent colony of some kind. If you seen the tv series they were putting man onto the moon based on concepts and ideas from NASA. Had Congress really tried, the tv series could have been a reality. But right now we are being pushed by Spacex and China to refocused our efforts on Moon and Mars.

3 way race to Mars, USA, Spacex like company, and Soviet Union in alternate reality.

We wanted to build a more powerful rocket than the SaturnV first.

The reality is Artemis is using hydrogen engine.
Everybody else is moving towards Kerosene and or methene engines.

The only reason SLS is resuing the shuttle hydrogen engine is to save job supporting the retired space shuttle.

The Artemis is not sustainable.

Why do you think US is also retiring the Delta heavy rocket.

We can tell Americans are feeling uneasy, losing confidence, and anxious watching every progress notes from China. :p: They can't get away comparing American past glories and new technologies with China's. Very childish it is. It's a reporting, a note, on China's new rocket. The overwhelming American response: "Yeah? I had it a long time ago. You just got here? LOL.. look at China's..."

But where are you now, the proud, the brave, the always-right Americans?

What reality check? we just develop our space technology based on our own schedule and timeline, what bothers you with our programs?
Because they're being childish, feeling insecured, losing confidence, .. We all know why.

Where are we now? NASA just launched the most powerful rocket in 50 years, which will then be followed by Starship/Super Heavy in the next several months.

The US now has a clear path back to the Moon and on to Mars with actual heavy lift rockets.

Meanwhile, China has renderings…..
