Looks like US effort to stall chinese tech companies isnt leaving much of a dent, despite a 11% decrease in north america there's still solid gains in EU africa and asia pacific

HONG KONG (Reuters) - China’s Huawei Technologies [HWT.UL], the world’s third-largest smartphone maker, posted a 28 percent rise in 2017 net profit on Friday, driven by cost controls and a solid performance in its home market.

Shenzhen-based Huawei saw net profit for 2017 rising to 47.5 billion yuan ($7.3 billion), a big rebound from last year’s 0.4 percent increase. The rise is largely attributable to a 85 percent drop in net financing expenses as the company booked smaller foreign exchange losses.

Revenue grew 15.7 percent to 603.6 billion yuan, in line with the company’s previous guidance and its slowest growth in four years.

Huawei vowed to focus on improving profit after posting the slowest profit growth in five years in 2016 as its slim-margin smartphone business weighed down profit growth.

Huawei’s consumer business, which includes smartphone operations, grew at a slower 31.9 percent to 237.2 billion yuan ($37.85 billion) after shipping 153 million smartphones last year. The year earlier the segment had grown 43.6 percent.

Huawei this week launched its most expensive flagship smartphone to date in Europe - the triple-camera P20 series that sell for 649-899 euros - a fresh attempt to compete head-to-head with Samsung and Apple in the high-end phone market.

Market share gains in Europe have helped Huawei offset the company’s exclusion from the U.S., the world’s most profitable market for phone sellers.

Revenue from the Americas dropped 11 percent to 39 billion yuan.

Huawei is going somewhere. It has the wind, the momentum and the innovative drive.

No dotard can pt a dent on it. Protecting apple from competition will make them weaker in the medium to long run.

Besides, the world is much bigger than the dotard government imagines it is. US is not the only option. It is not the most promising option, either.

Usually, (European and Japanese) automakers will offer much lower standards in the US. For instance, compare the same Honda SUV model in the US and China, the US model will be quite a watered down version of the one sold in China (or Europe).

The US customer is not that sophisticated, after all, and this kind of protective barriers will further encourage to reduce commitment to the US market.

Dude, Huawei has done this despite the ban in US.

If there was no ban, Huawei would have been far bigger.

The worry now is that US is now asking its allies to follow its policies. Australia is already framing laws that can give it power to ask its telecom operators to not choose Huawei. If this spreads, it can cause major harm still.

Indeed. What was most important was that Huawei spent 13.75 billion USD on R&D, by far the largest from a Chinese company, and among the top 5 in the world.

fake news, Huawei's 13.75 billion is smaller than a Bangalolo call centre's R&D expenditure in PPPPPP.

Huawei and other Chinese companies make good phones at a competitive price. I've been wanting to switch from an iPhone...the only problem is that I find android too fragmented...and the rest of my family has iPhones so that's another reason. In any case Apple has been lagging behind...and that new Huawei phone is too appealing.

Amazing how do u live without dual sim phones? Apple phones without dual sim given its crazy high price is really unacceptable.

. . .
Most Chinese actually have dual sim.Especially young people.
大网卡 蚂蚁宝卡 等互联网和联通合作的sim卡,因为流量便宜
去年联通4G用户大增 手机中的第二卡 大多被他们占领了
Are you sure?
Why do people need a second card?
Every company's network is nationwide.
I can only think about one for personal one for business.

Total 4G subscribers reach 932 million in Sep. 2017.

Here in the US as far as smartphones go...u gotta pay for each line(and these days unlimited data is sort of a must).

So unless u have a good reason to have a second line(like for ur business and personal) or some other valid reason...it's sort of pointless to have two sims. Some other uses I've seen of dual sim is to have an international line...to avoid roaming charges. In that case as well...I'm not in need of that...my whole family(even extended family) is here...and if I need to talk to or message my friends who live abroad then there's WhatsApp.

Dual sim isn't really a deal breaker for me. It's other features like 6GB ram that some smartphones have or the almost bezel-less screen of Samsung Galaxy. There's many features that other companies have introduced and Apple is lagging behind on.

I use 3 sims.
1 for normal use.
1 for 4G unlimited data as well as social media and email.
1 for Wechat, Whatsapp and other social media and email and all nonsense on a phone without contact list.
Mainly because of Privacy concerns and safety and I don't trust Android or IOS.

GOOD News, Hope huawei can invest electronic parts such as LCD 、 3D NAND FLASH and DRAM。 Although BOE is good at LCD and yangze start invest Flash and DRAM, but i think Huawei has better R&D ability
