Yesterday, in the third round of the FIDE World Cup 2017, China's Bu Xiangzhi (playing black) defeated World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen.
Today, on the Chess.com Twitch live-stream, Bu (playing white) chose to play it safe and perpetually-checked Magnus Carlsen for a draw. According to commentators Grand Master Yasser Seirawan and International Master Aman Hambleton, Bu had the advantage and could have attempted a win by pushing the "A-file" pawn down the board to queen it.
China's Bu Xiangzhi has knocked World Champion Magnus Carlsen out of the FIDE World Cup 2017 classical chess competition. This was an unexpected result and shows the strength of the upcoming Chinese chess grandmasters. There remains a total of four Chinese grandmasters in the field of 32 players in the third round.
