enjoy!

Are service stations located frequently?

I like those places; nice opportunity to stretch a little bit and enjoy some food.
At least every 50km according to expressway construction regulations. Close to big cites, can be every 30km.

The location of every service centre can be searched in Baidu map and Baidu navigation map, both can be downloaded for free(choose the city or province you want, and no extra data is needed).

Yaxi Expressway, the road in the heaven
The gap of western China and costal China is huge. GDP of all western provinces combined was only 2 trillion US dollar in 2013. Millions of Chinese in the west migrate to Central China and Eastern China to work, leaving empty counties and cities back in the mountains. I believe one of the solutions is better transportation and shorter distance to developed region. Expressways and high-speed railways will bring millions of travelers and send their products to the outside world.

After taking bullet train from Wuhan to Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, I took a coach to Xichang in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture. The whole journey was on 2865km-long Beijing-Kunming Expressway, it is called Yaxi Expressway from Ya'an City to Xichang. I was long looking forward to this trip, although not so much my style as a railway fan:D .

Chengdu is without doubt the centre of western China. Its long-distance bus terminal is located next to the giant HSR station and well connected by metro 20 minutes to the city centre.

2.2 trillion dollar in 2014.
The GDP growth of western provinces in first half of 2015 is very fast, all surpass 7%. Among them, GDP growth of Chongqing and Guizhou is over 10%.

Top 3 provinces are still all costal provinces, Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shandong, their dominance is unshakable. GDP of 3 provinces combined of first six months of 2015 reached 1.58 trillion US dollar.

GDP growth of central China is also remarkable, my province achieved 8.7%.

The problem lies in Northeast China and some provinces of Northern China. Apparently, growth of paradigm now switches to midwest.

The slow growth of Shan'xi is easy to understand with the province's heavy reliance on the coal industry which has shown extreme weakness in recent years。

But Liaoning?

thanks for the pics. Just a question. The poor parts of China are mainly due to a lack of infrastructure. In Canada, we have certain parts that are less developed than the big cities. Do the local people all have access to potable water by turning on their faucet or get water by other means?

That is not a problem, at least for the majority.
When I refer to infra, I mean a higher level. City dwellers in southwest China even have pipeline gas, so do some villagers in new style villages.

The slow growth of Shan'xi is easy to understand with the province's heavy reliance on the coal industry which has shown extreme weakness in recent years。

But Liaoning?
Liaoning is all about mining and heavy industry.
