China's Aging Population Bad for Innovation, Says Ctrip's Liang

. . .
.
Has it ever occurred to you that India is "young" because many Indians die young?

How does India's life expectancy compare to others?

You guys need to take steps to live a longer life.

Indians will take any statistic to make China look bad. And spin it around to make India look like a Supa Powa.

age is never an issue for entrepreneurship. government regulations and restrictions are.

Umm no. Young people have a far better understanding and desire for progress and change on average. Japan is a prime example. Government regulations and restrictions are not much different in Japan compared to 2 decades back, but the innovation potential has decreased markedly.

That is a very small reason for India's youngness.

The primary reason is fertility rate and child birth.

As for life expectancy, it is decent.

Surely below China, but decent. Apart from that, India's urban middle class easily has a life expectancy in the upper 70s.

Not my habit. I routinely praise China where required.
Also, I am not saying that India's young population will make it more innovative than China.

Innovation requires many many factors, but a young, science and tech oriented population is an important reason.

.
It's not called aging population. It's population reduction. Even a 1billion population for China will be good enough. In next 10-20years, many job will be taken by robots. Such population reduction for a 1st world country of China in future is necessary.

Our population dividend has gone, but the talent dividend just arrives. That is why we are now competing head to head with US in new technology, and leave all others behind, be it europe, japan or russia.

Next 10 years will be the explosive period for China tech advancement, surpass US overall, just like what we did in super computer and quantum.

Africa is no doubtfully the paradise of INNOVATION, because of their ultra-YOUNG age structure

Again, young population is one important reason, not the only one.

According to me these are the most important reasons:
  1. Funding, both government and corporate, for innovation
  2. STEM graduates and their quality
  3. Society Culture
  4. Captive Market
  5. Demographics
  6. Ability to work hard

People have been predicting job losses due to technology now for more than a thousand years.

Your whole population policy is based on Malthus, who has been totally wrong.

Technology frees people from lower productivity labor and makes it possible to engage in higher productivity jobs.

It was the explosion of the whole computer industry that has created millions of jobs in all sorts of fields.

Also, for demographics quantity there are three things to look at:
  1. Population: Here Chinese population is increasing at a very slow rate and may do so until mid 2020s.
  2. Workforce: Already declining
  3. Median Age: Increasing

How many 'innovative population' required for country like China, India? 100 million? Japan, Germany, Korea people must be all 'innovative' likes.

I totally agree.

Chinese science and technology is set for explosive growth for the next 10 years. It is due to a huge number of STEM graduates with both quantity and quality increasing.

And even this is demographics.

So while your children born decreased from 2 decades back, and your workforce is declining, the number of STEM graduates is increasing and their quality is also increasing.

But, both have limits.

You can only go on increasing STEM graduates so much if there is not a large basic population entering workforce, and ditto with quality. In fact quality sometimes with wealth decreases because people don't want to work hard, which is the most important thing in STEM.

PS-
NO. You haven't surpassed the US in either supercomputing or "quantum".

How many 'innovative population' required for country like China, India? 100 million? Japan, Germany, Korea people must be all 'innovative' likes.

Depends on how much a share of innovation you want.

India's and Africa's children population is huge. And if the kids there go to STEM at even half the rate of China's, the things can change drastically. Even right now, Indians send the second most students abroad to study STEM subjects.

China has a large number of young people as well. Aging population is a statistics, certianly the problem is increasing social insurance burden.

Frankly, I just don't understand why China is so damn against its primary and most important resource- Its people.

It is a country's population that determines its size and ranking among nations. Australia for example is a huge country in terms of size, but no body talks about it as a large country
