China's 600 kph maglev train conducts successful test run

Trains can move cargos and people in a much larger quantity with much lower cost.

Airplane and train have different roles, airplane is basically a point to point transportation, while train can have multiple stations along the route. And sure HSR will have huge challenge to regional airlines.

Yes, I think we are coming to a point where there is a conflict between high speed trains and aircraft. Air fares are dropping so low that high speed trains might not be profitable. It is now a fact in Europe that you can fly far cheaper than travel by train.

On a train you can walk around and the train drops you off in the middle of the city and with access to public transit. A plane (typically, not in NYC or SF though) drops you off in the middle of nowhere or the ghetto and you have to drive to wherever you're going. While you're on the plane there is huge noise, vibration and you can't move freely.

From a resource point of view air travel will never be as efficient with fuel as trains because the train doesn't need to generate lift.
