Team China returned to become champions after four years alongside the US at the 60th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), according to result released on the IMO website on Saturday.

The competition was held in the University of Bath, England from July 16 to 17. Six high-school contestants on the Chinese team won gold medals and two achieved a perfect score of 42.

They shared the championship with the US team with a score of 227, according to the website.

The Global Times' reporter found that five of the six US contestants were of Chinese descent, including the team leader and deputy leader. Five students of Chinese descent were also found in the Canadian team.

"The US has paid more attention to mathematics competition and many Chinese-US teenagers are devoted to it," Yun Zhiwei, a math professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told guancha.cn, adding that "these offspring of Chinese immigrants are as good as students trained in China, which intensified the competition."

This year's victory marks the first time in eight years that all the Chinese contestants won gold medals, media reported.

Of the 200 Chinese high-school students who participated in the competition since China joined in 1985 there have been 157 gold medals, 35 silver medals and six bronze medals.

China holds the record for the most gold medals in the competition, followed by the US with 130 golden medals and Russia with 99 golden medals.

Chinese education and science authorities released a document on July 12, aiming to strengthen math research and study. They said that China will continuously support basic math and strengthen applied mathematics.

The release came about four months after the Chinese team ranked sixth among 135 participants at the Romanian Master of Mathematics competition.

The IMO is the world championship math competition for high school students held annually in a different country.

The first competition was held in 1959 in Romania and it has expanded to 112 countries and regions this year, the IMO's website said.

Team USA won last year's IMO with a score of 212 while China came third with 199.

US team is called the B team of China because out of the 6 members, 5 are ethnic Chinese!

Koreas Finish 3rd And 4th At Math Olympiad

2019-07-22 17:36:07 / Update: 2019-07-22 19:40:55

South Korea finished third in the international math olympiad, while North Korea trailed right behind at fourth.

The Ministry of Science and ICT on Monday announced that all six South Korean delegates won a gold medal or more at the 60th International Mathematical Olympiad which took place in the United Kingdom between July 11th to the 22nd.

It is the third time that all the South Korean participants have brought home a gold medal from a math olympiad, after 2012 and 2017.

The United States and China shared the top position with 227 points in total, only one point ahead of South Korea. It is the highest number of points South Korea has ever earned at a single math Olympiad, with the previous record of 209 set in 2012.

North Korea garnered 187 points, two points more than fifth-place Thailand.

Vietnam ranks relatively high at both IMO 2019 (7th place) and IPhO 2019 (4th place) and none of contestants are of Chinese descent (and perhaps there has been none of Chinese descent since we participated IMO in 1971). I believe the same with Russian (6th and 3rd) and Korean (3rd and 2nd) teams.

Other than racial issue, there must be something good in former socialist countries education systems, with regard to training top scientists (East European countries used to rank high during 1960 - 1980 as well and many gold medalists have become well-known scientists, but working in the West)

Can anyone tell about ethnicity of Thailand contestants? Thailand has received good results in IMO in last few years, while their education system (both for the mass and for the elite students) seems not so good.

99.99 percent of all today’s inventions from aircraft to computer to internet to underwear are originated in the West.

What says us that?

Ok East Aseans are good in math. That’s too little. I am always the best in math in my class with my average IQ.

Good in math proves nothing!

During that time, East Asia was in turmoil, and there was no facility for manufacturing, therefore, invention of things should naturally come from the West.

The invention of aircraft may be more popular to daily life than what Professor Ngo Bao Chau has proved, but so is toilet paper. Global optimization (in math), pioneered by Professor Hoang Tuy, may be much less known compared to the invention of Internet. However, it is hard to say which ones are more important to human kind in long term.

And, from my point of view, invention of things, like aircraft and Internet, are generally from average engineers, if they are given sufficient investment for test and fail. But any math achievement can only come from top human brains.

Any achievement in math is an achievement of itself, although most people will never know and understand it.

Actually, the Chinese team should be called the B team of the USA.

Why?

Because eventually most of the Chinese team members will go and settle abroad.

US still gets all the top talent from China.

Instead of feeling happy, you should be sad.

The scale and enormity of brain drain from China is just enormous.

And it still continues even today.

Well, this is a traditional misdirect, and ad-hominem.

You should try debating with me on the actual points raised.
Actually many pioneers of PRC's scientific studies were founded by those who studied in US and came back to China, over 80% of Chinese students are coming back to China comparing to less than 30% a decade ago, cause China offers better pay and opportunities now, your mind is in 1980's when China was just as poor as India.

You see, we either steal (in technology), cheat (in sports), or do things that are useless. We have to beg you mighty Vietnamese and Indians for approval. Where we would’ve been without your guidance? :cheesy:
