BEIJING: India and China were engaged in tough bargaining on Monday with Beijing seeking an assurance that New Delhi would not encourage "American interference" in the region. The Indian delegation, lead by National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon, will continue discussion on the border dispute and the passport controversy.

At the talks, Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo said bilateral ties should not be affected by "noise" and instead focus on further cooperation, Xinhua news agency said. Dai was apparently referring to criticism in India that border talks haven't produced tangible results. Chinese leaders revealed a strong desire to keep India out of the emerging club of nations — Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines — involved in territorial disputes with China. Beijing's anxiety offers an opportunity for India to negotiate some tough issues like China's continued arms support to Pakistan.

Once US was the best friend of china's current best friend...... That was one of the reason for US being in subcontintent!!!!!

Once US was the best friend of china's current best friend......

We were once friends with America as well.

The US was friends with the RoC before the PRC took over in the Chinese civil war.

The US was also friends with the PRC (current China) during the 1970's when we had the Soviet Union as a mutual threat. At least until the USSR collapsed. Today, we are economic partners with a certain amount of mutual distrust on strategic issues.

America's interests are fickle and flexible, they change from decade to decade. The only thing that is constant is their power, which can never be underestimated.

and China was wise enough to utilise that period of friendship with America. India can do that too though i doubt we'd be as successful as China was. We got a lethargic government.

This is the case with every nation on Earth, not just US.

As they say in International diplomacy there are no permanent friends only permanent interests.

US used China as a containment to USSR, now they want India to do the job vis-a-vis China.

India will always be against any physical American presence in South Asia, because in the long term it will affect India too.

That's right. Partnership with the US can be a big advantage if you play it right.

Nowadays though we mainly go for economic cooperation with them, and parted ways on strategic direction.

Well I guess India is in better position of Bargain here :D
-USA is seeing China as a threat and as usual they need some help form locally availbe resource
- China definatly don't want USA anywhere near

So technically , both US and China want something from India. So what it could be ??? More techno base and fighting power with the help of US or solving long lasted dispute with China ???
I guess it's better we solve our disputes first and avoid all unnecessary fighting :D

That's right.

The difference here is that the US is the sole superpower. Power means a lot in geostrategic issues.

Our cooperation with the US went well, but it could have gone badly if the Soviet Union decided to go crazy before they collapsed. In which America would have liked us to be a buffer against one of the most powerful armies in history (Soviet Red Army), which needless to say would have been a big tragedy for us.

It was a big risk in hindsight, but it turned out well for us in the end.

Chinese leaders talk but show very little action. China wants India to keep US out of region then China needs to solve the border issue ASAP and in our favors since we lost a lot good men due to your sneak attack.

Pakistan brought CHina and US together. Pakistan and China have been working hand in hand for decades.....so your words mean very little to us. Actions speak louder.

We already offered to exchange recognition of Arunachal Pradesh for recognition of Aksai Chin. Basically turning the LoC into the IB.

Nehru rejected the offer, as he wanted both these territories, and he refused to negotiate. Instead, he started the Forward Policy against us.

Regardless, you can bring the USA into India if you want, it's a gamble that might just pay off well for you. Only time can tell.

So why cant you bring that offer up again? Secondly, Aksai Chin and AP was never yours to begin with, thats why we refused. Tibet was a soverign nation till you invaded and took it over? If it was China's, then you wouldn;t have to invade now would you? Sure the US may not be perfect but I think ppl here have grown up more than ever, and see the world changing. At least they are willing to help when China is playing a lot of games
