China has launched mass production of the country’s newly-unveiled first ever embedded neural network processing unit (NPU), marking one more major breakthrough in the country’s NPU research and development.

The VC0758 NPU, developed by China’s leading video technology supplier Vimicro is based on a data driven parallel computing model, which can greatly improve the smart chip’s computational ability at a lower power consumption rate, said Zhang Yundong, executive director of the Vimicro State Key Laboratory on digital multimedia chip technology.

Vimicro on Monday announced that it has realized mass production of the VC0758 NPU after five years of research, suggesting that China is now one of the countries with the most advanced artificial intellectual technology in deep learning based on a data driven parallel computing model, according China National Radio (CNR).

Zhang added that the chip is especially skilled in processing multimedia data such as videos and images. Its capabilities will especially be brought into full play when it is used for embedded computer vision applications, CNR reported.

The CNR noted that the smart chip will give a major boost to improvement for China’s video surveillance industry and can help the country to establish a leading position in the world.

According to China Central Television, the VC0758 will be widely employed in drone, intelligent drive assistance systems or in the field of robot vision.

I had this company's stock for years, until the end of last year when they announced privatization. They have been cooking something big for long time, and privatized it before breaking the news. Freaking greedy capitalists!

China is progressing so fast it's amazing.

The haters must feel the burn.

Congratulations to China!

It is also amazing that lots of innovation is coming from China's private enterprises, of course, with lots of government support.

These are indeed innovation booming times for China, just like the past two decades were manufacturing booming times.

Mighty Dragon has just awaken!

Vimicro developed China's first embedded neural network processor.

Video and multimedia chip developer Vimicro enters mass production of China's first embedded neural network processor. Neural network chips are the latest and greatest in machine learning. The chips simulate the neural networks in human brains and are ideal for pattern recognition applications.

Vimicro is applying its NPUs to video processing such as surveillance applications. The neural chip can also be integrated in the the video processing of drones and robots.

Vimicro's video surveillance system is automatically able to recognize faces, read license plate numbers and ID numbers.

With the development of the NPU, the company makes China independent from imports of AI chips. It took Vimicro 3 years to develop the VC0758 NPU. According to Chinese Guancha, the Vimicro Neural chip applies 16 patents.

Google revealed in May that they have developed silicon for its machine learning systems. The AlphaGo system is powered by Tensor Processing Units. IBM revealed last year a neural network chip as large as a Mouse brain.

Don't waste your time on someone that has already make up his mind no matter what
Don't let "small minds" convince you that your dreams are too big:china:

Grey Boy 2, my man, it's so good to see you brother.

Haven't heard from you since you left Chinese Defense Forum a couple of years ago when you went back to Hong Kong. You said you will be back but never returned. You were the heart and soul of that forum man. Once you left, things went downhill.

We missed you.

Oh hi, yeah its been a long time, perhaps constant changes are supposed to be part of the life
However losing 2 of my beloved ones within 2 yrs span proved to be too hard to swallowed
Anyway its heart warming to see an old comrade from CDF you mind to tell me your username there?

Grey Boy, Tianxia (known as @TaiShang on PDF), Martin were the main contributors to Chinese Defense Forum.

It was such a great forum.

I don't know what happened to that forum and all the content we posted.

Thanks pal. I'm just a nobody who takes pride for being a Chinese
My pleasure to know you as well
I'm a big fan of your Chinese high speed rail and infrastructure posts

Chinese Century

I'm sorry about your loss.
I've already get back on my feet proudly
Oh Chinese century pal, what happened to CDF?
Nice to know Tianxia is here as well

Great to hear.

CDF closed down as the activity on that forum dropped and hardly anyone visited after trolls started spamming the forum and moderators were absent.

I heard it was moved somewhere else and became part of a sub forum but I can't find it.

We posted so much content especially on science and technology regarding China.

Someone should find it.
