China to slow down speed of bullet trains

BEIJING: In a surprise move, China has decided to slow down the speed of its high profile bullet trains, apparently due to complaints from public of heavy ticket fee being charged.

China's high-speed railways will run at a slower speed than previously expected, Railways Minister Sheng Guangzu, who recently replaced Liu Zhijun following corruption charges, said.

In an interview with state-run People's Daily, Sheng said high-speed trains will run at 300 kilometres per hour starting from July 1, instead of the previously announced 350 km/hr.

The change to the country's high-speed rail network was made after Liu stepped down when he became the subject of an investigation for an alleged "severe violation of discipline" on February 12.

Sheng said only the four east-west and four north-south artery lines of the high-speed rail network will carry trains at 300 km/hr.

The inter-city lines that usually connect major centres within regions should be operated at between 200 and 250 km/hr, while most railways in central and western China will operate at less than 200 km/hr, he said.

The move was to placate passengers who complain they are forced to ride on high-speed trains and pay more because the ministry cancelled slower trains, he said, adding that there will be other options.

For example, the 300-km/hr lines will also operate bullet trains at between 200 and 250 km/hr.

Previously, China was expecting to build a high-speed rail network with an operational speed of 350 km/hr or more, which dramatically reduced distances between cities.

The landmark Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway was built to run trains at 380 km/hr that could compete with airlines.

But Sheng did not say whether the line will still run that fast when it opens in June.

China slows down showcase bullet trains
The Associated Press, Beijing, China | Thu, 04/14/2011 10:17 AM | Business

China is slowing down its showcase high-speed trains following warnings about possible safety risks and complaints they are a waste of money.

The country's new train minister, Sheng Guangzu, says the top speed will be cut from 350 kilometers per hour (220 miles per hour) to 300 kilometers per hour (190 miles per hour). He made the announcement in an interview with the Communist Party newspaper People's Daily.

High-speed trains are a national prestige project to link China's far-flung regions. But engineers say the planned top speed is too high. Others say the multibillion-dollar cost is too high for a poor country.

The previous train minister was fired in February amid an investigation into possible corruption in the ministry.

wow this article was pretty harsh

It is ok, the Chinese people are generally not hypersensitive or insecure about what West thinks about us, what we do care is about to improve our living standard in the future.

Is china a 'poor country'? I think not...

. .
the article states high prices.

i remember in an argument with Martian I asked him back then about the pretty high ticket rates,i wondered who is gona board those trains when they can save more time by getting a flight with just paying a little more bucks.

One of the prime reason High speed railway is not a possibility in India right now is the high ticket prices according to a survey by Indian railways,I dont think people here in India an afford it,though not completely aware of Chinese situation.
