China begins construction on 1,213km railway worth $6.15bn
6 January 2015 | By Joe Quirke

China has begun work on a 1,213km railway that will link the two western regions of Qinghai and Xinjiang. The project is expected to cost $6.2bn.

Both provinces are sparsely populated by Chinese standards, but Sun Faping, the deputy head of the Qinghai provincial academy of social sciences, said the line was important owing to the oil and mineral resources in the area.

The railway will reduce the travel time between Golmud in Qinghai and Korla in Xinjiang from 26 hours to 12.

China is spending $25bn on five new railway lines and a total of $113bn on other infrastructure projects.

The railway is scheduled for completion in five years.

It is already very crowded now.
Very expensive in winter time...
China only has one Hainan island in the tropical south

Ha ha. You must have forgotten the other South China Sea islands.:(

These islands - Yongxing (Woody), Yongshu (Fiery Cross), Chigua (Johnson South), Huangyan (Cuateron), etc are being developed and still work is in progress to increase their sizes.

1,200 KMs of HSR in 6 billion :o::o:
How are you building these things in such less
Money

They are still not open to tourist...
I hope they can be made bigger to hold tourist and hotels..
It is said to be similar as Maldives..

.

most place in Xinjiang and Qinghai are desert or no-man area.
So it will not cost much to compensate the local people.
Also China can produce almost everything of the HSR, from trains to railways to basic cement..
Also this project is not meant to make profit.
So this is why it is lower cost..

China's HSR network is growing fast.

Can't wait as this will make tourism in these places easier.

Some of the beautiful places in Inner Mongolia that would be made more accessible by HSR.
Benefits both the tourists and the locals, it's a win-win.

Wudangzhao Monastery (五当召)
Inner Mongolia_Wudangzhao Monastery (五当召).jpg

Situated on Jihuluntu Mountain, 54 kilometers north of Baotou City, Wudangzhao Monastery is one of the four largest Tibetan Buddhist temples in China, together with Potala Palace in Tibet, Ta'er Monastery in Qinghai and Labrang Monastery in Gansu. It consists of six halls for chanting Buddhist scriptures, three Living Buddha mansions, one mausoleum and multiple lama dormitories. The monastery looks solemn and grand.

Huitengxile grassland (辉腾锡勒草原)

Inner Mongolia is famous for its wide and beautiful grasslands. Located 135 km from Hohhot, Huitengxile is a high recommended spot to see the boundless sky on the green prairie. It features a sea of flowers, countless lakes and Heishan Mountain, with its grotesquely-shaped rocks. The area offers all kinds of activities for tourists, including horseback riding, archery and tasting local food.

Xiangshawan (响沙湾)

Xiangshawan, also known as the Resonant Sand Gorge, gets its name from an echoing sound you hear when you step on the sands. It is located in the middle part of Dalad Banner near Ordos City. Here, you can enjoy the sand dunes and participate in various kinds of activities like sand surfing and camel riding. It is close to the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan and Zhaojun's Tomb.

Enjoy!
