(TibetanReview.net, Mar11, 2014) – China is to spend an estimated 30 billion yuan ($4.9 billion) to build a Lhasa-Nyingchi (Tibetan: Nyingtri) railway line over the next three to four years, with the construction set to begin later this year, reported the official China Daily newspaper Mar 10 (also posted on the official eng.tibet.cn website Mar 10). China has already announced that it will complete and begin operating the ongoing 253-km Lhasa-Xigaze (Shigatse) railway line by October this year.
Once completed, the Chinese railway network will reach the doorstep of India’s border state of Arunachal Pradesh, which China claims as its territory as a part of its claim over Tibet.
The announcement of the planned new construction was made by Lobsang Jamcan, chairman of the Tibet Autonomous Region government. Explaining the railway’s strategic importance, he has said, "I travelled to the border regions at Nyingchi, Xigaze and Ali (Ngari) prefectures last year, and I discovered that the construction of roads and infrastructure in these regions, which are important for national security, lags far behind. Many border roads and transport facilities of neighboring India are edging closer to territory under our control."
He has told the Tibetan deputies attending the ongoing National People's Congress in Beijing that the government was "preparing to begin building the Lhasa-Nyingchi railway when we hold a ceremony to mark the start of operations for the Lhasa-Xigaze railway". That will be in October this year at the latest.
The report said the feasibility study on the 435-km-long Lhasa-Nyingchi railway had been completed and was ready to be sent to the central authorities for review and possible approval.
Wangdoi, head of Nyingchi prefecture, has explained the new railway line’s economic importance to China. “We have 200,000 people living in an area rich in resources. Poor transport conditions are creating a bottleneck for economic development in the area,” he was quoted as saying.
He has added that the railway will also boost tourism in the area, noting, "Two and a half million people visited Nyingchi prefecture and spent 2.2 billion yuan last year."
He has also explained the new railway’s importance to the overall transport infrastructure of China, noting that it could be an extension line that links Lhasa with Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, and could complement air and road corridors as part of a larger transport network.
The report cited Liu Xiaobin, a senior official of the National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planner, as saying China’s central government will give "massive support" to the railway project in Tibet. He has warned that construction should be carried out efficiently.

No wonder people laugh at indians. China building anything on their land alarms them.

Laughing? Alarm? What were you smoking when you wrote this gem? Did you know that anything constructed close to the border becomes a dandy target for destruction? Your railway lines will be turned into heaps of twisted metal and your bridges into rubble in the event of a war. The millions of dollars you have spent would literally go up in smoke.

So guess, who would have the last laugh? And who should be alarmed? :P :azn:

I dont think China used it for military purpose ,it may only use for civilian purpose.Look at their location.Railway line with bridges nearer to border.A few round Prahaar will make it a heap of metal and concrete.
Any way it is good.Because now GoI also prompt to increase infrastructure nearer to border and it will be good for people there.

Well, if we are talking about war, then New Delhi would be reduced to a smoky ruin by rocket artillery from Aksai Chin. There is a reason we kept the forward position from 1962. I am pretty sure New Delhi is worth just a bit more than a few million dollars.

On a more serious note, the new railway serve two main purposes:
1. Connect more parts of Tibet with main railway transportation network of Eastern part of China, thus allow better economic development in Tibet.
2. Make eventually preparation for the China-Pakistan economic corridor.
While it does have military value, it is really just a bonus since India is not considered a strategic priority.

lol。New Delhi is too close to the border。

Consequently anything built or to be built in New Delhi is under the threat of Chinese rocket artillery and subject to total annihilation。:enjoy:

Don't use your inability as an excuse。

Delhi is too close to the Chinese border??? :woot: :omghaha: Friend, please take the trouble of looking up a map! Your geographical knowledge is way out of sync with reality.

Really? :woot: Then why is China pumping in massive military hardware at discounted rates into Pakistan?

Answer: To keep India at bay!! Meaning India is the the most important strategic priority that makes you insecure.

New Delhi is only 300 km away from the Chinese border.

Which is well within range for our thousands of cruise missiles and conventional short-range ballistic missiles.

So cirr is right, Delhi is relatively close to the Chinese border.

Not that I would recommend using our missiles on civilian targets though. They would mostly be reserved for first strikes against military assets such as airfields.

Actually, the Chinese controlled Aksai Chin is about 350km from New Delhi, well within range of rocket artillery. Due to its elevation advantage, fighters deployed from Akai Chin will also reach New Delhi without the need to climb for height first. As for arms sales to Pakistan, that's precisely why China doesn't consider India to be a high priority. You have your hand full with Pakistan.

Your logic is strange and doesn't hold any water. Distance where missiles are concerned is relative. That way can we say that Beijing is close to the Indian border just because the Agni V can blast it to smithereens? Or that Shanghai is near the American border as US Minuteman ICBMs can blow it to bits?

C'mon CD! You can do better than that! :P

Can we have New Delhi? Pretty please:lol:

It is you who should take a good and hard look at the map and realize that New Delhi is well within the range of Chinese rocket artillery。

The centre of New Delhi is some 330km from the Sino-Indian border。

Now go and check out WS-2D and other more recent WS-2 variants。:azn:
