sorry for google translation, but readable:

The first use is for the civil pharmaceutical, quantitative analysis of the molecular level formula can use supercomputers, the pharmaceutical composition is more scientific and reasonable, and can do moderate dose components. Can be said that the practical supercomputers can drive the development of Chinese pharmaceutical industry.

The second purpose is weather analysis, the meteorological satellite reconnaissance information centralized data processing, quantitative analysis, modeling analysis, are the need of super computer analysis, so that a more rapid, more accurate, China not to launch a polar orbit meteorological satellite? So the timely processing of two global meteorological satellite data can give us the ability to foresee the global weather information according to their own strength, rapid data processing ability of super computer, can give China predict global weather increased strength, this is especially in time of war more useful, I can have independent predictive global weather, without rely on others, this is the basis of a winning high technology war.

The third point is the ship design and plane design, it is not difficult to understand, because the ship in the sea travel, and fighter plane used in the knowledge points are the analysis of fluid mechanics and atmospheric gas dynamics, both of which require a computer modeling analysis, mathematical calculation is needed and optimized processing large quantity, can design the best ship and the optimal performance of a fighter plane, the super computer can come in handy for the study of these two aspects.

The fourth point is password cracking, which is in the modern war of little use, because the two warring nations can change the key at any time, the popular words is now the key technology can develop so that you can't hack 10-15 days, the most advanced super computer, and in the 10-15 days, the two warring nations can change the key at any time this theory, you always can not break the enemy's war is key, especially the development of quantum technology makes the decryption key is even more difficult, almost theoretically impossible, but we research supercomputer will enable us to acquire a method to solve the enemy key, the number of the enemy is a deterrent, so the development of super the computer can drive the development of military key schools.

The fifth point is the intelligence analysis, source of wartime intelligence is very complicated, and varied, how in a variety of complex information, analyze the valuable information, is a knowledge, interested in military enthusiasts can have a look of intelligence analysis professional books, he has a special data processing and analysis process and mathematical modeling analysis step, ensure faster higher stronger finished intelligence analysis task for super computer.

The sixth point is beneficial to us to establish joint operations simulation system of the war, is to use virtual reality technology to build the computer simulation training system of soldiers, what the enemy of geographic data, aircraft, warships, tanks are quantified in performance with the technology of virtual reality computer environment, let the soldiers do not go abroad can feel the battle feeling, such training soldiers, can save a lot of cost, and the super computer can only when the system server, use this is super computer more.

2013-06-17 03:09:31+00:00

MANNHEIM, Germany; BERKELEY, Calif.; and KNOXVILLE, Tenn.--Tianhe-2, a supercomputer developed by China’s National University of Defense Technology, is the world’s new No. 1 system with a performance of 33.86 petaflop/s on the Linpack benchmark, according to the 41stedition of the twice-yearlyTOP500 list of the world’s most powerful supercomputers. The list was announced June 17 during the opening session of the 2013 International Supercomputing Conference in Leipzig, Germany.

“Tianhe-2, or Milky Way-2, will be deployed at the National Supercomputer Center in Guangzho, China, by the end of the year. The surprise appearance of Tianhe-2, two years ahead of the expected deployment, marks China’s first return to the No. 1 position since November 2010, when Tianhe-1A was the top system. Tianhe-2 has 16,000 nodes, each with two Intel Xeon IvyBridge processors and three Xeon Phi processors for a combined total of 3,120,000 computing cores.

Titan, a Cray XK7 system installed at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory and previously the No. 1 system, is now ranked No. 2. Titan achieved 17.59 petaflop/s on the Linpack benchmark using 261,632 of its NVIDIA K20x accelerator cores. Titan is one of the most energy efficient systems on the list, consuming a total of 8.21 MW and delivering 2,143 Mflops/W.

Sequoia, an IBM BlueGene/Q system installed at DOE’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, also dropped one position and is now the No. 3 system. Sequoia was first delivered in 2011 and has achieved 17.17 petaflop/s on the Linpack benchmark using 1,572,864 cores. Sequoia is also one of the most energy efficient systems on the list, consuming a total of 7.84 MW and delivering 2,031.6 Mflops/W.

Fujitsu’s “K computer” installed at the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science (AICS) in Kobe, Japan, is now the No. 4 system with a performance of 10.51 Pflop/s on the Linpack benchmark using 705,024 SPARC64 processing cores

A second BlueGene/Q system, Mira, installed at Argonne National Laboratory is at No. 5 with 8.59 petaflop/s on the Linpack benchmark using 786,432 cores.

Rounding out the Top 10 are the upgraded Stampede at the Texas Advanced Computing Center of the University of Texas, Austin; JUQUEEN at the Forschungszentrum Juelich in Germany (and the most powerful system in Europe); an IBM BlueGene/Q system at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; SuperMUC, an IBM iDataplex system installed at Leibniz Rechenzentrum in Germany; and Tianhe-1A at the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin, China.

“According to TOP500 Editor Jack Dongarra, who toured the Tianhe-2 development facility in May, the system is noteworthy in a number of aspects. Most of the features of the system were developed in China, and they are only using Intel for the main compute part. That is, the interconnect, operating system, front-end processors and software are mainly Chinese,” Dongarra said.

Other highlights from the June 2013 TOP500 List, which can be found at Home | TOP500 Supercomputer Sites, include:
  • There are 26 systems with performance greater than a petaflop/s, up from 23 six months ago.
  • The new No. 1 system, Tianhe-2, and the No. 6 system, Stampede, are using Intel Xeon Phi processors to speed up their computational rate. The No. 2 system, Titan, and the No. 10 system, Tianhe-1A, are using NVIDIA GPUs to accelerate computation.
  • A total of 54 systems on the list are using accelerator/co-processor technology, down from 62 in November 2012. Thirty-nine of these use NVIDIA chips, three use ATI Radeon, and eleven systems use Intel MIC technology (Xeon Phi).
  • The number of systems installed in China has now stabilized at 66, with 72 and 68 on the last two lists. As a nation, China now holds the No. 2 position as a user of HPC, ahead of Japan, UK, France, and Germany. Due to Tianhe-2, China has also taken the No. 2 position in the performance share, ahead of Japan.
  • Intel continues to provide the processors for the largest share (80.4 percent) of TOP500 systems.
  • Eighty-eight percent of the systems use processors with six or more cores, and 67 percent with eight or more cores.
  • IBM’s BlueGene/Q is still the most popular system in the TOP10 with four entries, including No. 3, 5, 7, and 8.
  • The entry level on the list moved up to the 96.6 teraflop/s mark on the Linpack benchmark, compared to 76.5 Tflop/s six months ago.
  • The last system on the newest list was listed at position 322 in the previous TOP500 just six months ago.
  • Total combined performance of all 500 systems has grown to 223 Pflop/s, compared to 162 Pflop/s six months ago and 123 Pflop/s one year ago.
Geographical observations

  • The U.S. is clearly the leading consumer of HPC systems, with 252 of the 500 systems (250 last time). The European share (112 systems – 105 last time) is still lower than the Asian share (119 systems – 123 last time).
  • Dominant countries in Asia are China with 66 systems (down from 72) and Japan with 30 systems (down from 32).
  • In Europe, UK, France, and Germany, are almost equal with 29, 23, and 19 respectively.
About the TOP500 ListThe first version of what became today’s TOP500 list started as an exercise for a small conference in Germany in June 1993. Out of curiosity, the authors decided to revisit the list in November 1993 to see how things had changed. About that time they realized they might be on to something and decided to continue compiling the list, which is now a much-anticipated, much-watched and much-debated twice-yearly event.

The TOP500 list is compiled by Hans Meuer of the University of Mannheim, Germany; Erich Strohmaier and Horst Simon of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory; and Jack Dongarra of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

China supercomputer Tianhe-2 world's fastest: Report

By AFP | 17 Jun, 2013, 04.18PM IST

BEIJING: A Chinese supercomputer is the fastest in the world, according to survey results announced Monday, comfortably overtaking a US machine which now ranks second.

Tianhe-2, a supercomputer developed by China's National University of Defense Technology, achieved processing speeds of 33.86 petaflops (1000 trillion calculations) per second on a benchmarking test, earning it the number one spot in the Top 500 survey of supercomputers.

The tests show the machine is by far the fastest computer ever constructed. Its main rival, the US-designed Titan, had achieved a performance of 17.59 petaflops per second, the survey's website said.

Five of the world's 10 fastest computers are installed in the US, the survey said, with the two in China, two in Germany and one in Japan.

The recognition of Tianhe-2, meaning Milky Way-2, as the world's fastest computer marks the return of the title to China after the machine's predecessor, the Tianhe-1 was ranked the world's fastest in November 2010, only to be overtaken by a machine from the US.

Unlike some of its Chinese predecessors, most of the Tianhe-2's parts are developed in China, except for its main processors, which are designed by US firm Intel.

"Most of the features of the system were developed in China...the interconnect, operating system, front-end processors and software are mainly Chinese," the list's website quoted editor Jack Dongarra as saying.

But the US still dominates the overall supercomputer rankings, with 252 systems making the top 500. The number of European machines, at 112 systems remains lower than the number of Asian machines, at 119, the list's website said.

The supercomputers on the Top 500 list, which is produced twice a year, are rated based on speed of performance in a benchmark test by experts from Germany and the United States.
