China has successfully developed and tested an advanced air-to-ground missile for helicopters, according to state media.

The new weapon was put through its paces at a desert location in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region in late June, when it was fired from a helicopter and hit its intended target, China Aviation News reported.

The missile, whose name and specifications were not revealed, is a stand-off weapon, meaning it can be launched from a distance sufficient to allow attacking personnel to evade defensive fire.

With its multiple guided systems, long range and capability to evade jamming, the missile is the first of its kind for China’s military, the report said.

It was developed by the China Helicopter Research and Development Institute, a subsidiary of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China, and although the project was delayed because of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is now back on schedule, the report said.

Once fully functional, the new missile could replace the AKD-9 and AKD-10 anti-tank missiles and YJ-9 anti-ship missiles already in service, it said.

Unlike its predecessors, the new missile is not limited to use with just one type of helicopter, making it similar to the US AGM-114 “Hellfire” series.

Song Zhongping, a military analyst in Hong Kong, said that having a single missile capable of attacking fixed ground targets, moving armoured vehicles and even ships, would make it much easier and faster to prepare and maintain the helicopters, rather than having to consider multiple weapon options.

“An all-purpose munition could speed up the response and also largely improve its overall combat capability,” he said.

China’s military already has the home-grown TY-90 air-to-air missile for use in helicopter dogfights. A combination of the new weapon and the TY-90 – which was the first of its kind in the world – plus rocket bombs would boost the attack power of the PLA Ground Force’s aviation units, Song said.

The force has several attack helicopters, including the home-grown Z-10 and Z-20, and the Z-19 which was modified from the Z-9, which in turn was based on the French “Dolphin”.

What is the range?

. .
Spike nlos equivalent, big shrimps said at least 20KM.
20 km is huge and well outside the range if shoulder fired Sam's and tank ammo

Combine this with NAP of the earth flying and terrain making and you have a mean machine

We might be able to take a glimpse at it during this years Zhuhai airshow(defense exp).
We are just not the ppt types of ppl, we don't yelled out for "game changer" even when the project is still on paper.
anyway, when it comes to pla army, my biggest expection for now is the upcoming unmanned turret 155 spg.

Any news about WZ-16 engine for Z-10ME? WZ-16 is supposed to replace WZ-9 engine. Engine was the only reason due to which Pakistan selected ATAK over Z-10ME, and now thanks to US we can't buy ATAK.

I have been reading about its upgrade/ engine from time to time, but I can't put them together, sorry.
PS:WZ–16 is a sino french project for civilian heli, thus not the designated engine for any of the army heli.

I hope the engine gets upgraded/replaced with a better one as quickly as possible to meet PA's requirements so we can buy this amazing helicopter.

China Develops Advance Air-To-Ground Missile: Test Showed it Could Destroy Moving Targets and Even Ships
BY BRINKWIRE ON JULY 18, 2020

While other countries are busy dealing with COVID-19 pandemic, China has been testing its new advanced air-to-ground missile. The test result shows that the new weapon can be used to attack moving targets, ground targets, and even large ships. The South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that it is China’s first long-range stand-off weapon.

In late June, the newly developed missile was tested at a desert location in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region. A helicopter was used to fire the new weapon, which successfully hit its target, as reported by China Aviation News.

It was confirmed that the new missile is a stand-off weapon. Even if China’s air-to-ground missile is launched from a distance, it can dodge any counter-attacks fired at it. The People’s Liberation Army did not reveal its name and specification.

It is the first weapon of China’s military with guided systems, long-range features, and the capability to evade jamming. The missile developed by a subsidiary of the Aviation Industry Corporation of China, the China Helicopter Research and Development Institute (CHRDI), was delayed because of the global pandemic caused by COVID-19, but it is back on track again.

The AKD-10 and AKD-9 anti-tank missiles and Yj-9 anti-ship missiles, which are already in service, will be replaced by the new missile once it is fully functional. It can also be used by different types of helicopters, just like the US AGM-114 ‘hellfire” series.

China is currently planning to develop its next-generation aircraft carrier within a year and build a sister ship. The Typen 002 aircraft carrier began the final assembly process. It is considered as China’s third carrier and the second to be domestically developed.

“Assembly of the new aircraft carrier has begun and is expected to be completed in the first half of next year because the COVID-19 pandemic slowed down progress,” said one of the two independent sources coordination with South China Morning Post. The sources requested anonymity since the issue is sensitive, as stated by the report.

Type 002 carrier’s sister ship had begun initial construction work as early as 2018. However, the operation was stopped because of technical reasons. Photos showing two huge parts in a dry dock, assembled from prefabricated vessel components, were circulating on mainland China’s social media platforms.

The latest images revealed that the aircraft carriers made much more progress compared to the previous satellite images taken by the U.S. Centre for Strategic and International Studies in April 2019.

I wonder why China don't use their more Powerful WZ-10 Engine (1,600 KW) that already in Mass Production and currently powered their Z-20 Helo Fleet
