China subsidiary in Singapore Shopee being accused of racism

I think the issue here is because english has been regarded as a lingua franca for quite some time. It means the language is detached from the culture and people from which the language originated from, effectively making the language a language that belongs to everyone. That makes non native english speakers feel that they are not being forced to become english when they speak english and in return, they see the english language just as one of the soft skill one has to master. Anglo people are just lucky to have been born and raised with the language.

Chinese on the other hand only gained significant international importance in the last 10-15 years and the language has not yet been fully detached yet from the culture and the people. Using chinese in an international setting would create an image of sino centrism although it is not always necessarily the case given further explanation such as the fact that Shopee‘s primary suppliers are from China. In short, Chinese is not yet a lingua franca.

Not many people can speak English as well, nor want to put effort to learn it.

In Singapore, minorities would rather learn French, Japanese and Korean like something very cool. They will shout racist even if government promote the "Speak Mandarin" campaign among Chinese, that has nothing to do with them.

I guess GoS has deliberately create low level antagonism among Singapore races. The GoS are stooges of Anglos and heavily anglicized people. They really heart pain to see their white masters get down trodden these days.

Still does not change the fact that English has achieved the status of a lingua franca in the business world. English language is the most widely spoken language in the world with about 1,13 billion speakers. However, out of those 1.13 billion speakers, only about 379 million can be considered native speakers with the rest speaking the language as second or official language. Chinese Mandarin has a comparable number of speakers, even more if other variation of Chinese languages are added into the mix, but its speakers are centered around Chinese and ethnic Chinese. For example, Chinese Mandarin speakers numbered around 1.11 billion with 917 million are considered native speakers, the same goes for its variances.

Yes, Chinese languages are one of the most widely spoken language, but the language is not yet detached from its root people and root culture. As it is still exclusive to Chinese and ethnic Chinese, it is not yet a lingua franca that people can use without any feeling of sino-centrism. The easier example would be Bahasa Indonesia vs. Javanese. Bahasa Indonesia is a malay based language with its native speakers in Indonesia only made up to a very tiny portion of Indonesian population whereas Javanese native speakers were and are the majority. So why was Javanese not chosen as the national language? Because Malay language was the lingua franca in the region since it was a "bahasa dagang" or trading language, widely spoken in port cities and their immediate hinterland surroundings. Javanese on the other hand was centered around ethnic Javanese hardly known outside the island of Java or Javanese enclaves in other islands. Making Javanese as the national language would surely be met with animosity and strong anti-Java sentiment whereas a Malay-based language, made into a language for Indonesians, is something that everyone can agree to.

There is a strong antagonism of minorities in Singapore against Chinese. These are all unwarranted. I see GoS stirring discord. The Straits Times in Singapore are always flooded very negative Chinese reports, some as far as tabloid or gruesome crime. This is clearly the desire of GoS to paint Chinese as bad guy,

Meanwhile India has all sorts of disgusting crime, events happening daily one a far bigger scale. Nothing of this sort get reported.

Whenever Straits Times mention about China, it always paint China as a threat in SCS, a imperialist against Taiwan....etc

Even the Littoral States of SCS is not as orgasm is Straits Times in hate against China,

Mandarin is very hard to learn.

A lot of people are going to give up.

Even Crazy Rich Asian Movie is now racist. These days, there is an ally of Anglo, and Anglicized Chinese in Singapore to turn Singapore Chinese into shameless nihilists. I hope Muslims and Malays can ally with Chinese in this titanic fight.

Ultimately the victory of China, and Chinese, against USA will be the key to freedom of Asia.

I hope South East Asians can see that their interest lies in alignment with China/

***********

“The focus is specifically on characters and faces of East Asian descent, which plays into issues of racism and colorism that still exist, not only in the US but in Asia,” the Singapore journalist Kirsten Han writes in Vox. The film’s “all-Asian boast,” in her view, is “nothing more than a perpetuation of the existing Chinese dominance in mainstream media and pop culture.” Sangeetha Thanapal, an Indian Singaporean writer and activist, takes issue with the way the movie is being sold as “this big win for diversity, as this representative juggernaut,” telling a New York Times reporter, “I think that’s really problematic because if you’re going to sell yourself as that, then you bloody better actually have actual representation.”

That depends on how far mandarin can unconsciously be learnt by people. English language has the advantages of media and popular culture like movies, songs, and youth culture. Through exposure to media and pop culture, interest and passion in the language will grow because they need to understand the language to be able to enjoy those.

If China can emulate what the anglo people do, Chinese will also be learnt by people no matter how hard the language is. But this will take time. It took the English more than 300 years to make their language widely used.

The Chinese language is a very rich language. It has a strong ethical components. It express histories and culture fundamentally different from European language. It has the simplest grammar in the world, but so simple and flexible that the flexibility become complex.

The Chinese culture instruct the elites and intellect to take care of people and to sacrifice for country. This is diametrically opposite to the Anglo culture of Ayn Rand and social darwinism.

Which is the reason, it is much easier for Chinese elites to move resource from rich to poor province, and no one will complain. Else this guy become civilization traitor. You cannot ask Texas to subsidize Alabama.

True, tried once and gave up. I guess English has a big advantage due to its simplicity as well as the fact that the world media, and entertainment Industry is dominated by English. So it makes people more willing to learn the language as well

A lot of people are going to give up.

Biden's granddaughters, Trump's granddaughters and Obama's daughters are all learning Mandarin. If they don't find it difficult, you should work harder than them.

What is with the frenzy with Indian CEOs i have seen in the last 10 years especially in tech scenes? No offense to Indians, but so far I haven’t found anything special with Indian workforce in Europe except for their ability to quickly befriend westerners and specifically westerners.
Very good at talking... That's the key

. .
After observing behavior of Indians, I strongly feel they have similar characteristics senior managers/MBAs, in Western and Singapore MNC.

Singapore and white man managers really love them.

They probably would not survive in China MNC because managers will need job get done.

In summary, all big MNC are evil organization, exploiting engineers and promoting the worst psycopath.

Very good at talking... That's the key
they are the best at chating sh it and they do it convincingly.

If they can make French, Japanese, and Korean as their career is fine.

But if not, who is able to tell them to learn something more productive and earn money?

English is quite bothersome to learn, but it's just a tip of an iceberg,

We learn English, so we are able to go to USA or UK to study, to gain knowledge, and bring it home.

Indonesia will never as this developed and modern if in our country no one is willing to learn foreign languages to study and get knowledge in foreign countries to bring it home.

As China economy and technologically advanced, we should learn Mandarin started from today.

One day we will send thousands of students to China as we do to USA today.

Singapore has become tinderbox due to foreigner flooding into Singapore. Some jobs did require Mandarin speaking credentials and they are deemed racist. Meanwhile there are really racist job requirements by India nationals requiring candidate speaking Hindi (local Indians speak Tamil).

GoS are those rich dynasty or ivy league scholar have lose touch of the ground despite numerous complains on the ground. They dont care. Recently things become so bad that races in Singapore start fighting. Minorities are now full of grievances of victim mindset.
