China steadily moves ahead in global innovation rankings: report

Haha, youtube video uploads relevant to innovation capability. Very insightful knowledge!!

I want to design my own framework on Innovation Index. I will use the Youku video uploads, plus pictures sharing via the Wechat Friends Circle, as the No.1 indicator!

If you included Wechat Moments, then, I would have contributed immensely in China's innovation.

Lol Singapore scored poorly in general education particularly for expenditure in education, where it came in at 102nd place.

Last year Singapore topped PISA and TIMSS in all subjects for both primary and secondary school students. Isn't it actually a good thing that we managed to achieve such a result with a relatively low expenditure in education?

Maybe your students' weak point is that they are very bad youtube uploaders. You know it takes innovation to find a cute cat, make a 20 second video, and get 13.000 views.

PISA? That's an insignificant index in which Confucius sphere countries do extremely well.

I think Chinese members should not take these rankings so seriously. These are merely indicative. China has done some excellent work in clean energy, quantum computing, robotics and electronics. I am especially impressed by the quantum satellite experiment performed recently, where they demonstrated quantum entanglement at really far distances. This is a major breakthrough. No Asian country has made such strides in technology except Japan, and to a lesser extent SK.

Having said that, there are also some misconceptions about the way certain technologies work. I have frequently seen some members here tout the virtues of superfast computers, for example. But the fact is that gains in hardware are a function of time. Major breakthroughs are required in software and algorithms. Same applies to some other fields where certain emerging developments may well trump quantitative aspects such as fast adoption of what is cutting edge today.

Again, great work by China. Just keep a holistic view though.

this is a per capita ranking, so u guys should be happy with China' s rank. u r not happy enough? Okay, then look at Russian's rank, those poor guys r in the same group with Vietnam. it is not a joke.
that is even more ridiculous.
Maybe we should also include index like English speaking media and the number of glorious plans. Then Supa Powa will not be left behind.

China now ranks as the most influential country in four of eight core scientific fields, tying with the U.S., according to the Japan Science and Technology Agency.

The agency took the top 10% of the most referenced studies in each field, and determined the number of authors who were affiliated with the U.S., the U.K., Germany, France, China or Japan. China ranked first in computer science, mathematics, materials science and engineering. The U.S., on the other hand, led the way in physics, environmental and earth sciences, basic life science and clinical medicine.

Despite winning Nobel Prizes for three straight years, Japan came in at fifth or sixth place in many fields.

China's progress was especially pronounced in computer science. While the country accounted for only 3% of the most referenced studies in 2000, the figure had surged to 21% by 2015. It has also had the fastest supercomputer in the world since 2013, and the two fastest in 2016.

China is also rapidly catching up in physics, where the U.S. has long dominated. It is spending more than $6 billion to build the world's largest particle accelerator, which could put it at the forefront of particle physics.

These advances were made on heavy spending by Beijing and an extensive campaign to attract talent. China's public and private spending on research was double Japan's in 2014, and is fast approaching the American tally of $460 billion. It is making efforts to bring home Chinese researchers who trained abroad, and to connect with overseas talent through study abroad programs and temporary placements.

"I was not expecting China to overtake the U.S. in many fields," said Yuko Ito at the Japan Science and Technology Agency. With U.S. President Donald Trump planning a major spending cut for the sciences, China is expected to become an even larger player.

per capita ranking
As said WIPO is an UN org specialised in this field, sure they publishes it too. See 2016 report:

Perhaps now you can guess why two western colleges have to manufacture an index by adding loads of factors totally IP-unrelated onto original WIPO data? Like even wikipedia edits and youtube uploads?

To use the so-called normalized efficiency parameters to evaluate innovation, and even try to defend it, that's as silly as use "# of military planes per unit of population" to evaluate the military power. I guess BELARUS very likely to win the title of "World No.1 Airforce country", if we use such indicator.

BELARUS, a country with 9 million population, has ~100 modern combat aircrafts (MiG-29, Su-25) in service. Meanwhile, the population size of China is 150x of Berlarus, but China obviously doesn't have 15,000 military aircrafts. I feel so sad, because our PLA Airforce is even much weaker than Airforce of Belarus. :hitwall::hitwall::hitwall:

Normalized parameters have their own use.

Let's take your example.

According to your example (if your stats are correct), then yes Belarus has a better air force per population. But it has a worse overall airforce.

Both normalized parameters, and gross parameters matter.

Like India's GDP is higher than that of Switzerland, and Netherlands. So does that mean Switzerland and Netherlands are poorer than India? Hell, no. Here one needs normalized parameters.

There are another two sub-indexes created in the same report, called innovation output index and innovation input index, China is No. 11 in output while in No. 31 in input. meaning China is super efficient in innovation (No. 3, trailing only by Luxembourg and Switzerland) . But seems that your high efficiency is actually hurting you instead of favoring you on the overall rankings cuz they will combine the input and output with little adjustment on the efficiency difference.

What you listed is more related to innovation output. It is interesting to see Japan is put on No. 20 in innovation output while their filing IP is No. 2. So Japan is actually more seriously underestimated. Actually the whole east asian countries were treated almost the same. even though they are far more active in R&D activities than most of the western countries. WIPO IP is quickly becoming a game played by 4 guys: C. J. K. plus US of A

This list is total BS tho. Iceland with 330,000 people? what kinda of output they produce? or luxembourg with 550,000 people.. lol

how about let's create a Quora Index to measure global innovation?
That website is full of ignorant supa powans.

I thought supa powa was the number one according to comments by PDF RSSers.
