China-Sri Lanka Cooperation: News & Discussions

It's strange because the ordinary Indians are quite positive with China and even the Indian administration too.
its bcoz many ppl see every problem as black and white not as grey . they fail to see the other side of the story .

Agree.. You cant judge all Indians with the online keyboard warriors.. Majority are positive or even neutral.. Most pro business and pro positive diplomaticaly.. Most negative people are teenagers and young adults totally oblivious to the real world.. There seem to be a spurt of ultra nationalism since the Modi Admin came to power.. Indian middle class have always been a escapist society but since recently it's been quite obvious

Can our ships still call on your ports for replenishment?

I learnt that there are issues between India and China only after reading PDF posts otherwise the ordinary Indians are not negative towards China at all. Indian media is on a whole different level though. Everyday it's spreading mass hysteria against China for some reason and a certain section of online community gets turned on by it hence the comments.

It's just the some people on forums and newspaper comment sections. Kind of like Dailymirror in the UK.

China is already investing on infrastructure and it can set up manufacturing bases in Sri Lanka in the near future because of rising wages of China and cheap labour of Sri Lanka.

But Daily Mirror is more or less a tabloid.. Even Indian broadsheets tend to be blind nationalist bar a very few like the Hindu publication.. I guess there is so much of competition, Truth seem to blur on selling points

Good example is how competing news channels turned Indian public opinion over the recent BBC documentary Ïndia's Daughter" .. One channel rivals to the one that was suppose to broadcast it went on a rampage totally against any ethics media or social.. The gullible masses totally lapped it up, Most didnt realize it had nothing to do with western bias but a made up conflict by it's own media for competition

It's a shame that there is a population who easily falls into that trap but to be honest, the same situation happens in Sri Lanka but in a domestic level because Sri Lankans don't buy "threats posed foreign nations" notion.

Yes, if you read my threads/posts I have pointed out that some industries would migrate out of Shanghai (as well as other coastal China cities), with proper infrastructure in-place (ports, road/rail, airport, energy, communications) Sri Lanka seems ideal destination!

Oh no two questions about it.. Fear sells, And masses just laps it up.. I always state that literacy rates are hyperbole in 3rd world countries like Sri Lanka..And the main problem there is media tend to be highly selective, Tamil media tend to be Tamil oriented and biased, Sinhala media like wise highly nationalistic and bordering on chauvinism, Only the English media tend to be alteast somewhat unbias but with a readership of maybe 12% of the population that helps jack shit

Only thing is Lankans tend to be less reactionary, Less emotional to their sub continental counter parts, May be because many cant be bothered, It's islander mentality

there is a historic aspect of these reaction in India , the people of india are being invaded and looted for 1000s of years, and when that happens they see outsiders as conquerors and latch to the ultra-nationalistic thoughts , may be bcoz sri-Lanka was never invaded by west asians is the reason of indifference of attitude. and chinese ppl are also nationalistic to core and you can also point some blame to japanese massacre during ww2. one thing is those cultures which doesn't fight for its existence ultimately perishes , and about Modi , well he is a pragmatic nationalist not the average TOI commentator .

Totally agreed and the journalists some of the most clueless morons out there. The ones I've known lack even the basic analytical skills and they tend to follow the easiest path which is to pick the most sensational/popular topics and score their own goals to increase their own popularity. I have very little respect to journalism. No real solution comes from their work. In fact, I am in favour of regulating what goes on in media.

haha so true about island mentality. I think this is one of the reasons for our past failures. Many tend to be self-centred and have this attitude that the whole universe revolves around them so they don't bother to learn what goes outside of SL. Actually, it exists on many different levels and one of the biggest issues that hinders our growth. Have you ever noticed the arrogance of people who went to "popular" schools in Colombo/Kandy? What they don't realise is that it's something to be rather ashamed of than proud. Some people even think that it's justified to kill over their school. :omghaha: Even though I studied in one, I absolutely hate that concept. :disagree:

On the contrary.. Majority of Lankans tend to be very nationalistic.. Especially against perceived Indian hegemony.. There is a wide believe that Sri Lankans especially Sinhalese tend to suffer from a minority complex, A reason there is much reluctance to share more power with Tamil's.. For them it's 17 million of them against 80 million attritional Tamils few kilometers away from ready to over whelm them.. And not to forget centuries of European imperialists.. Sri Lankans are indeed a global minority

Ancient and recent historical events does not help to alleviate those fears either but like i said they tend to be a wee bit less reactionary to Indians or Pakistani's

Mr. Modi is indeed refreshingly pragmatic but i think most nationalists have taken that pro actionary pragmatism as a license to hyper nationalism, Especially right wing Hindu's.. Daily utterings of not so political correct statements regarding ethnic and religious minorities have become a norm suddenly and quite worryingly

Survival of a culture depends on its ability to absorb positive elements from other dominant/emerging cultures and make a unique version out of those elements. We live in a globalised world so for any culture to succeed over others, it has to gain a competitive edge against other cultures. You can't do this if you reject anything foreign just for the sole reason that it is foreign.

well , tamilnadu is not a country itself so Sinhalese need not bother now after the curse of LTTE is over , New Delhiwill not let that happen. and about hyper-nationalism and attitude towards minorities, never HIndus persecuted others , even Jews were never killed or persecuted in India quite a contrary to other countries where jews reside. and ministers of present govt never said anything against minorities . somedays back a person from your country complained about allowing srilanka national anthem in tamil. so lets not point finger . we all have problems , may be Indian things gets exaggerated due to our large population.

who says we reject everything which are foreign , well democracy was foreign to us a millenia back, we embraced it , similar to many other things. well some ppl here think themselves superior when they learn english , mimic west. 20-30 yrs back ppl used to celebrate the birthdays of small children in Mandirs (Hindu temples ) and gave foods to poor , now they cut the cakes, now many people hate to serve their old parents because they see them as burden ( i am not saying that ppl like this didnot exist earlier but they are too many now) many traditional recipes are lost , many form of plants/seeds are lost. no point in blind mimicking . i admire the japanese in that aspect. they preserve their culture.

Agreed culture is not static.. It evolves.. And if you dont, You die out, Thats natural selection..

That is something brain dead bigots like HeinzG never understand

There no pointing fingers here.. It's a open discussion.. Try not to be overly defensive like most other Indian posters here when India comes in to spotlight..

What was stated were genuine fears and general thoughts of the people.. Tamil Nadu was not a country in the 70's and 80's either but that didnt prevent it from wrecking havoc in the island for over 30 years.. Yeas the Central Govt's policies have changed a lot since the days of Indira doctrine.. But fears and apprehension remain,, Especially since tht hate and attrition towards Sri Lanka remains in the political circles in Tamil Nadu and bought up from time to time for thier political survival

When I said "you", I didn't mean India. It was a reference towards all cultures in general. And yes, India absorbed democracy but you failed to make your own unique version of it. Same goes for Sri Lanka. What goes on in one place doesn't work in the other in its original form.
