China-Sri Lanka Cooperation: News & Discussions

SinoLanka relationship is time tested and steadfast.. Our diplomacy goes back over sixty years and relationship over 2000 years.. That did not start with the Rajapksa regime nor will it end with it's demise as some Indian and western media try to imply

The very reason they seem to celebrate that false belief prematurely should be taken as a compliment by China.. Especially the west jittery about the growing global power and challenge China is

Don't forget the fact that China was extremely sidelined by UNP governments previously. It is because of the massive investments China has made in SL recently that the new Yahapalana government cannot ditch it easily as before. Even they know how much Chinese money means to the SL economy.

I really dont like the talk coming out of Sirisena, especially his rhetoric during the election. Sri Lanka has always been a reliable partner but the current administration seems shaky and full of backpedaling.

Nonsense talk about Chinese economic imperialism in Sri Lanka could really damage a great relationship, even if such talk is retracted later on.

You can't ignore the possibility that the previous regime colluded with the Chinese investors to artificially inflate the cost of massive infra projects to benefit from it

Thats a complete misnomer.. Can you please quote where either president Sirisena or the PM Wickremasinghe had said that ?? Before or after elections ?.. Specifically on your qoute "Chinese imperialism"??

Please dont dig in to what Some Western and Indian media seems to imply, Thats there version of premeditation.. President Sirisena's 2nd state visit will be to the Peoples Republic of China, Thats how much the relationship they value.. Remember all Lankan leader including Rajapaksa visits india first kind of been a protocol since independence, So thats nothing new

This govt is nobody's bunny.. They just wants a more balanced policy that will benefit the country.. Nobody will get a open ticket.. Sri Lanka President Says He Dodged CEPA Talks in Delhi -The New Indian Express

What ever inquiry in to those projects will be to asses the corruption charges against the Rajapaksa regime not the Chinese govt or Chinese investments.. China itself in on the anti graft anti corruption drive to clean up it's system under the direct guidance of President Xi.. Just because a Butt hurt Rajapaksa loyalist comes here day and night and make childish rants about the new govt.. It does'nt make them true.. Surprised at the quick to jump conclusions by some of our Chinese friends here.. Expected a little more confidence from age old allies.. No govt in Sri Lanka will jepodize that relationship

Don't forget the fact that China was extremely sidelined by UNP governments previously. It is because of the massive investments China has made in SL recently that the new Yahapalana government cannot ditch it easily as before. Even they know how much Chinese money means to the SL economy.

When did that happen ?? Which UNP govt sidelined the Chinese..Dont post crap just to score some browny points here.. I'm not a UNP supporter but your loyalties need to be for the country not for your political party .. So talk sense

A UNP govt had not been in power since 1994!!! That's two decades !! And in the midst of a civil war that finished just 6 years ago, The Chinese really opened up their markets and foreign direct investments from the 90's, So they really started looking for investments post civil war in the island.. Who in the right mind want to invest in a country plagued by terrorism and war ? Where did the UNP govts source weaponry and armaments during the 80's to fight the Tamil terrorists ? India? It was all from China and Pakistan.. Stop clutching at straws

This is not really true. PM said that he would run an investigation regarding post city project because he said that necessary environmental assessments were not carried out which is actually true. No one really talks about Chinese imperialism except for few hipsters who are not taken seriously by anyone,

Last time there was an UNP government, China was a hardcore communist country and UNP is capitalist by nature so there were no surprises back then but now the situation has changed. China is as capitalist as USA now so the UNP needs both.

Not for you to decide
Yup. Exactly. It's upto to New Delhi to decide. And New Delhi decided for SL in last election :enjoy:

No more subs, though investment is welcome for betterment of people of SL, but no role play of middle man in big league.

Sri Lanka vows to create law-based environment for Chinese investors
By Zhang Yiqian Source:Global Times Published: 2015-3-2 22:43:01

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera said he expected further improvements in ties with China as he wrapped up a two-day visit to Beijing at the weekend.

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena is scheduled to visit China later this month, and the main purpose will be to strengthen relations, said Samaraweera. The island nation's new administration, which took office in January, announced a reevaluation of some Chinese-financed projects, raising concerns that it might hurt the Sino-Sri Lankan relationship.

There has also been speculation that Sri Lanka's new government is shifting away from a pro-China foreign policy and leaning toward India.

"The reviewing of projects is not targeted at Chinese investors alone," Samaraweera said at a press conference Saturday. "Right now, there's no allegation against Chinese companies."

During his visit, Samaraweera met with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, who called for the nation to offer a "sound legal environment for Chinese investment." He also met with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi and Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng.

Samaraweera said he had discussed these matters with Chinese leaders and echoed Li's suggestion, saying that the Sri Lankan government is keen for a law-based investment climate. At the meeting with Li, he said Colombo is committed to joining in the development of the Silk Road concept with Beijing.

In 2013, China emerged as Sri Lanka's largest foreign direct investor, accounting for 24 percent of foreign direct investment, according to Investment Promotion Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena in previous media reports.

The two countries are continuing negotiations for a free trade agreement as well, said Ranjith Uyangoda, Sri Lanka's ambassador to China.

Samaraweera said the number of Chinese tourists visiting Sri Lanka increased by 136 percent last year. The government hopes to receive 250,000 Chinese tourists by 2016.
