Chinese defense minister to visit Sri Lanka, Nepal

Chinese Defence Minister Chang Wanquan left on Sunday for official visits to Sri Lanka and Nepal, the Defence Ministry said, trips that could unnerve neighboring India.

China is vying to increase its influence in Nepal, which serves as a natural buffer between China and India, challenging India's long-held position as the dominant outside power in the landlocked nation.

China has also invested heavily in Sri Lanka, funding airports, roads, railways and ports, and including the island nation of 21 million people on its "One Belt, One Road" mission to create a modern-day "Silk Road" across Asia.

The ministry, in a short statement, said Deputy Naval Chief Su Zhiqian would accompany Chang.

It gave no other details.

China's Defence Ministry said in December that China would hold its first military drills with Nepal in 2017.

In 2014, Sri Lanka allowed a Chinese submarine and a warship to dock at its port in the capital Colombo, prompting concern in New Delhi.

India, which has a festering border dispute with China, has looked at the latter's strategic ambitions in South Asia and in the Indian Ocean with some nervousness.

China has close defense ties with India's long-time rival Pakistan, and has been getting closer to Bangladesh and the Maldives too. Chinese warships now increasingly drill in the Indian Ocean too, as Beijing becomes more confident about projecting power far from its shores.

It doesn't really matters what India thinks/reacts; even though India proclaims itself as superpower of South Asia. These friendly visits will enhance the security and development between these countries. India is welcome to do the same.
Sorry man. It is not the superpower of SA but the Supa Powa 2012.

I wonder how India reacts
It is not a relevant country in that region.

At his meeting with visiting Chinese Defence Minister Chang Wanquan, President Maithripala Sirisena said Sri Lanka would enter into a number of agreements with China in a manner that would not be detrimental to the sovereignty and integrity of the country.

The Chinese Defence Minister is on two-day official visit to Sri Lanka. He called on the President this morning.

The President expressed hope that China would continue to provide military training to the Sri Lanka armed forces and expressed his gratitude to China for assistance in the elimination of terrorism, particularly during the crucial stage of the war.

The visit took place at a time when China is planning to take over a stake of the Hambantota port in the southern Sri Lanka. It is also timed with the increased participation of the US military in joint operations in Sri Lanka in recent times.

Former President A P J Abdul Kalam on Friday lauded the Indian Space Research Organisation's scientists for successfully launching the PSLV-C9 to put 10 satellites in orbit.

Besides, the Chandrayaan-I unmanned moon mission by the year end would add another feather in the country's space programme, Kalam, said.

"India has become very advanced in space technology," he said, adding that the country would become a superpower by 2012.

"Though I have envisioned India to become a superpower by 2020, the attitude and the confidence of the youth, to conquer everything in the right spirit, would make the country a global leader and superpower within five years," Kalam said.

China's Defense Minister Chang Wanquan

COLOMBO, March 21 (Xinhua) -- China and Sri Lanka will continue to join hands in promoting development in each other's country and deepen cooperation in all fields, President Maithripala Sirisena and visiting Chinese State Councilor, Defense Minister Chang Wanquan have agreed here.

Chang, who arrived in Colombo Sunday, met with President Sirisena and his Sri Lankan counterpart respectively on Monday.

The president expressed his appreciation for China's consistent assistance for his country in economy, agriculture, science and technology, education, defense and other areas.

He noted that he had met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on several occasions and they had reached broad consensus on ways to further promote bilateral relations.

Sri Lanka will energetically follow through joint cooperation projects with China and continue to make great efforts in deepening pragmatic cooperation with China in all fields, he said.

Sri Lanka will, like as usual, steadfastly support China's stance in international and regional affairs as well as on issues of great concern to China, the president said.

Chang noted that the two presidents had agreed to promote the "strategic partnership of cooperation featuring sincere mutual support and long-lasting friendship" between the two countries, when they exchanged congratulatory messages on the 60 years' anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations in February.

He conveyed President Xi's greetings to President Sirisena and also expressed appreciation for Sri Lanka's support for China, especially in matters concerning China's core interests.

He noted that Sri Lanka is an important country along the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road, saying China would like to work together with Sri Lanka in promoting each other's development so as to benefit their two peoples.

Chang also held talks with Sri Lankan State Minister of Defense Ruwan Wijewardene. The two exchanged ideas on promoting relations between their two militaries and pledged to maintain high level contacts, deepen cooperation in all aspects to bring the military ties to a new high.
