China Slowly Squeezes Global Carmakers Out of Its Massive Market

Global car production 2022

China, the US, and Japan took the top three spots, accounting for a combined 52.8% of global automobile production. China stayed in first place, making it the 14th year it has topped the rankings. Chinese production rose 3.6% to 27.02 million units, driven by a recovery in domestic demand. Chinese exports also surpassed 3 million units for the first time. The US grew 9.4% to 10.02 million units.
Japan fell 0.2% to 7.38 million units. This is the fourth consecutive year Japan has seen declining production. It was also the only country in the top 10 to see a decrease in production.
KAMA explained Japan’s production decline as being due to the ongoing shortage of semiconductor chips, which delayed the performance recovery of major automobile makers.
