China's principle is that unless the central govt allows, it is illegal for a region to vote for independence by itself, and China will not recognize it.
Therefore, even if Russia and China have good diplomatic relations, Putin must let the Ukrainian govt recognize the independence of these three regions first, otherwise China will not support him.

Ukraine Russia fiasco was spurred by USA since 2013.

The reality is does China evacuate its citizens making it look like they find more credibility in the US Government warnings vs the constant denials of their ally the Russian Government. Who do they want to look like they are believing?

As of March 8, the Chinese govt has withdrawn all the Chinese people who remain in Ukraine, their foreign spouses and the immediate relatives of foreign spouses from Ukraine. They returned home by special plane from Romania. Thank the Romanian govt for its help.
One Chinese expatriate was injured and no one died.
