Never heard of the Ye Shiwen controversy. Maybe it was made into a bigger deal inside China more than outside China. The only one I remember is the Chinese gymnasts who looked like 8 year olds next to all the women gymnasts from every other country.

Both soccer and baseball don't really allowed cocked up, just that in soccer, you have some degree of open chance to fix your f-up, in baseball, you still can fix it, but more likely than not, you don't.

Well I guess it would be interesting to see the number of turnovers in a soccer game compared to the final score.

Actually it seems the IOC stripped them of a bronze for underage gymnasts (I didn't hear about that).
Not sure if this was the team I was thinking about. I thought it was 2012...maybe it was earlier.

I think the problem is football (soccer) doesn't penalize people for f-ups. In basketball if you are not watching what you are doing and the other team steals the ball from you there is a pretty good chance they are going to run the court and score. In baseball or American football if you drop the ball the other team is probably going to score. In fact they even track how many time people screw up (turnovers, errors, fumbles) to give people an incentive to be on guard, concentrate, and play their best. In tennis you screwup the other guy gets a point. You miss one shot in golf you may lose.

In soccer if you loose the ball to the other player nobody seems bothered...probably because they will probably loose the ball themselves within 15 seconds. They don't flash a stat on a board saying that's the 20th time in the game he's let that happen. No urgency that the other team may score.

If they want to make the game more interesting they should play without a goalkeeper. People will play more professionally because if they screwup the other team can score more easily.

I would also propose some new rules like:

1. No touch. The game gets faster.

2. Having to get the ball to the other half (opponents' half) of the field in a certain amount of time (15 sec.). No mindless ball moving in one's own half after scoring a goal and pulling some 9 players back. If you score in the 75th min and the opponent is slightly weaker, it is almost certain that the rest 15 minutes is a waste of time because nothing will change.

3. The game never ends in a draw.

In Euro 2016, semi-final match, Germany vs France. The reigning World Champions were penalised heavily for making 2 or 3 disastrous errors which have caused the Germans their place in the final against Portugal

The first error was due to Schweinsteiger's raising hand which touched the ball in the box for a penalty to France. The second was caused by the inexperienced Kimmich and followed by Neurer's insufficoent clearance of the ball to safety.

According to the West, only the white races can win gold medals in swimming.

Ye Shiwen won the world championship gold the year before the Olympics. She was favourite to win Olympic gold so it was not a shock.

China must really improve in track & field just like it did in swimming in order to beat the US consistently. China can't always rely on other nations to deny the US in track & field. Like swimming, China stops the US itself instead of hoping a country like Australia stops the US.

Other sports China can win more golds are cycling and rowing.
