China sees its relations with India as one of the most important bilateral relationships

Chinese President Xi Jinping

China’s new leader Xi Jinping has indicated that he will look to follow his predecessor’s policies in engaging with India and seek continuity in bilateral ties, as the new leadership in Beijing takes control following a once-in-ten year change.

Mr. Xi on Tuesday echoed his predecessor Hu Jintao’s suggestion, made during a visit to India last year, of a “five-point proposal” to improve ties with India. Mr. Hu, the former Chinese President, during a visit to India in 2012 had called for maintaining high-level contacts; expanding economic complementarities; boosting people-to-people ties and multilateral cooperation; and for both countries to “properly handle” their differences in his proposal.

The new Chinese leader, who took over from Mr. Hu last week, spoke of a similar five-pronged proposal in an interaction with a group of reporters from the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) group of countries held ahead of his first overseas State visit to Russia and South Africa for the BRICS Summit later this month.

Mr. Xi proposed five steps to boost ties: “First, to maintain strategic communication and keep bilateral relations on the right track. Second, we should harness each other’s comparative strength and expand win-win cooperation in infrastructure, mutual investment and other areas. Third, we should strengthen cultural ties and constantly

increase mutual understanding and friendship between our peoples. Fourth, we should expand coordination and collaboration in multilateral affairs to jointly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries and tackle global challenges. Fifth, we should accommodate each other’s core concerns and properly handle problems and differences existing between the two countries,” the Chinese President said, according a transcript made available.

Mr. Xi’s comments suggest the new Chinese leadership will largely continue with the previous administration’s approach to India, which emphasised boosting economic ties and cooperation on multilateral issues, while at the same time appearing less willing to engage on more difficult issues such as the border dispute, transboundary rivers and China's ongoing projects in ****************** Kashmir.

Mr. Xi suggested any breakthrough on the long-running boundary dispute remained unlikely, describing the border issue as “complex”.

“The boundary question is a complex issue left over from history and solving the issue will not be easy. However, as long as we keep up our friendly consultation we can eventually arrive at a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable settlement. Pending the final settlement, the two sides should work together to maintain peace and tranquility in border areas and prevent the boundary question from affecting the all-round development in ties.”

Mr. Xi is expected to have his first meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh later this month on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in South Africa. In a letter to Dr. Singh earlier this year, the new CPC General Secretary said he was of the view that “the world has enough space for China and India to achieve common development, and the world also needs common development.”

He reiterated that message on Tuesday. “China and India have a traditional friendship. We are the two largest developing countries in the world and combined population exceeds 2.5 billion,” he said.

“To jointly follow the path of peaceful development and development through cooperation meets the common interests of the two countries.

China sees its relations with India as one of the most important bilateral relationships and is committed to pushing forward the China-India strategic and cooperative partnership.

We should seize these opportunities and take solid steps to bolster exchange and cooperation in all fields and take China India relations to a new height.

Everyone's making the right noises. I hope we can bury the hatchet for good this time.

Hope we have an amicable solution of our border issues on table.

I doubted very much , one min india will be in Russia camp next min they will be in us camp next min they will be in euro camp I think india is the most difficult country to develop such relationships.

We are in no one's camp - we do not fight someone else's war.

That's the core ideology of our 'non alignment movement' policy, too hard for some to understand.

Since Independence we have maintained a safe distance from every camp. What we just need a sincere effort from our leaders to reduce the level of mistrust we have now.

Don't be delusional ya all relationships are build on trust, sometimes wether you like it or not you have to go out whole heartedly support your ally this you never able to do, take the case with srilankra , you guys keep saying you want to develop good relations with them and yet continue vote aginst them in un .

Just a short while back, lot of outsiders said that Hu Jintao's "Peaceful Rise" concept was fake, and that he was secretly a warmonger.

In hindsight, Hu Jintao did not start any wars or bloodshed. There were a lot of diplomatic conflicts no doubt, but no wars, and no cross-border bloodshed with any neighbouring country.

People should realize that modern Chinese leaders are pragmatists, they think and act with logic and reason. They are not ideological fanatics that would start wars for no reason.

We are voting against them because of internal political pressure from our Tamil populations, and i do support voting against them, given the atrocities they carried on their Tamil populations (Not talking about LTTE).

Sino-Indian relations are growing in a very positive direction what with trade between the two countries presently at $70 billion slated to reach $100 billion by 2015 and $500 billion by 2020! And that ain't chicken feed by any stretch of imagination.

This is more important than fighting over a wasteland like Aksai Chin where not a blade of grass grows and is of no economic or strategic importance especially to India. A lasting solution could be: Give Aksai Chin to China and make them recognize Arunachal as an integral part of India. It's a win-win situation for both.

Egos and political compulsions on both sides is preventing this from happening. But hopefully, a solution will come about sooner than later.

we maintain relations with every body and act in our own interests just as u do..we stay in nobodies camp.even china maintains relations with all those countries.

we didnt voted against srilanka yet..its easy for u to support them because there are no tamil citizens in china..in a democracy like ours people play a crucial role that too before elections..besides india told them multiple times to refrain from the violence against innocent civilians which was even accorded by their president.and they continued their blood shed..

Well India and China needs to learn one fact that to have Equal challenge against West or NATO, Russia-China-India have to come together.

We together can secure our interests in Africa and relations with countries like Syria, Iran etc.

World can't ignore 1.3 + 1.2 billion people.
