China says military will respond to provocations

BEIJING (AP) — China's military is prepared to respond to all threats to the country's sovereignty, a government spokeswoman said Tuesday, ahead of the expected announcement of another big bump in defense spending.

Legislative spokeswoman Fu Ying said China supports resolving disputes through negotiations and its 2.3 million-member People's Liberation Army — the world's largest — is for defensive purposes only.

However, Fu warned other nations not to test China's resolve.

"But if some countries wish to provoke or wish to damage ... regional peace and the regional order, then we must make a response, and an effective response at that," Fu told a wide-ranging news conference on the eve of the legislature's annual session.

"The point of this response, is to, on the one hand, maintain China's territory and sovereignty, and on the other hand to maintain the regional order and peace," Fu said.

Other countries should take China's sovereignty claims seriously if they truly care about regional peace and security, she said, singling out the United States by name.

Her remarks came amid festering disputes between China and its neighbors over the control of islands and sea lanes in surrounding oceans. There has been a sharp escalation of tensions with Japan in the past 18 months over control of a string of tiny uninhabited islands in the East China Sea.

China is to announce its latest defense budget on Wednesday. Spending on the armed forces rose 10.7 percent last year to 720 billion yuan ($114 billion), the most for any nation apart from the U.S.

Textbook propaganda when increasing military spending. It is hard to convince the public that toys of war are more important than food and clean water, unless you can point to an external threat to justify the expense.

Unfortunately China in 2014 is searching for a limited-conflict where they can test their new technology, practice their tactics, show the public that the money has been worth it, as well as satisfy a nationalistic desire to prove that they are a military power.

Is there an Island nation near China that is not under the US Nuclear umbrella? If so, I would be very worried about the obvious signs that China is going to look for someone to practice on before they would ever consider a full scale attack on Japan or Taiwan.

The US was able to showcase an astounding technology leap in Gulf I, which the whole world still studies to this day. China is just waiting for its opportunity to attempt the same, although I am sure they would prefer their next-gen fighter-bombers to be in full operation, since air superiority and electronic warfare would be a major objective.

How Viet Nam take back the island from China? Be more realistic, I don't see how Viet Nam have the money, military, or political power to take back the island. These island in the middles of the ocean, you need naval power to force China hand and take back the island.

We r changing to get stronger, the power is slowly transferring to people instead of holding tight in the leader's hands. Only VN leader try to make friendship with China coz we r 'communist brothers', but Viet people dont like China . When the power transferring complete, war will happen.

How Viet Nam take back the island from China? Be more realistic, I don't see how Viet Nam have the money, military, or political power to take back the island. These island in the middles of the ocean, you need naval power to force China hand and take back the island.

We will try to unite Sub-mekong region to get bigger and more powerful, thats why Thailand is a mess now. When that plan complete, we will cover SCS(east sea) with sea mine if China refuse to return our islands. China economy will collapse coz their oil tanker, their merchan-ship can not pass through SCS(east sea)

So, China will have to return our islands to save their economy.
