China-Russia Airliner CR929 to Go Into Production in 2021, COMAC Says

(Yicai Global) Jan. 25 -- The CR929, the first long-range wide-body jetliner China and Russia have jointly developed, is set to begin manufacturing this year, Yang Zhigang, pre-research chief engineer of the airliners' Chinese developer the Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China, said on Jan. 23.

Starting production means confirmation of the plane's shape, size, main structural materials, system design and main suppliers, The Paper reported, citing Yang.

COMAC and Russia's United Aircraft set up a Shanghai-based joint venture in May 2017 to design the CR929. The base model CR929-600, which seats 280 passengers, is benchmarked against the Boeing 787 and has a range of at least 12,000 kilometers.

"If possible, we definitely hope some of the core systems each have two or more suppliers," Yang stated. "In a sense, this provides an insurance mechanism for the continuous operation of our business. Such a [supplier selection] method is also applied in main civil aircraft products in the world."

The newly developed wide-body aircraft is expected to target China, Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States as its main markets, with the Asia-Pacific region secondary.

COMAC has successfully developed the ARJ21 90-seater regional aircraft and the C919 158- to 168-seat passenger jet. The ARJ21 has already started commercial flights, while delivery of the first C919 is slated for the end of this year, Yang added.

Very likely CR929 will be solely a Chinese project. Russian wanted the right to market this plane in China.

Chinese so far are refuse to give them this lion share.

IF thats true then russians are expecting too much. My understanding is that already it is china which is bringing the money while russia is bringing some skills which will be paid through chinese money. That means it is revenue for russia from day one while china is taking all the risk developing it. THerefore the risk based profit must go to china while russia can still expect payment for the skills they contributed.

The Russians will want the plane to use their engines, but down the line, if the Chinese can develop a better engine they can drop the Russian engine and the letter “R” from the name, and change it into what it was meant to be the C-929.

Chinese C for Comac

They want to make the duopoly a Trio

It will take a while to match the engineering quality of Boeing & Airbus Products, but will add another product line for the airline and air transportation industry.

Agree.

Good for innovation through competition.

The initial target is the domestic markets in CN and RU. CN already is the world's largest aviation market. So, lots of potential. Besides, in the event of (unlikely) sanctions, domestic capability becomes important.

Other potential markets are Southeast Asia and CIS region.
