Yea permanent magnet makes little sense. Even if a train leaves every 5 mins - assuming length of train crosses a point on one second - then thats 299 seconds of useless magnet and one sec useful.

Permanent magnet is a part of the suspension and it is always useful.

Don’t forget permanent magnet is too weak, it can’t accelerate trains to high speed. Unless you build a slow train. principle of electromagnet train is similar to electromagnetic gun. the train is shot out of rail. From the usefulness I don’t think such magnetic train has a future. Germany and US scrapped both magnev train and electromagnetic gun. Xi Jingping just does it because he has money to waste. Ccp needs something to show off.

I read from an article, one reason of buying the Maglev technology is to, use it as part of the reference , to accelerate the development of EM catapult.

Now China got both EM catapult and EM artillery.

But I will never get any info on whether engineering team of Maglev assisted in weaponizing the technology.

If the speculation is true, then China would already has profited immensely nevermind if Maglev is unviable commercially.

All of this achieved by a country that was torn apart by a civil war & colonialism just 7 decades ago. China keeps achieving new heights every day.

Technology is getting to be pushed forward.

All simpler technologies that can be mastered at home or in a small workshop, are already being conquered as it's cheap and easier to master, accessible to almost everyone who has enough skill and willingness to try hard enough.

I think in the future what is left is the "expensive" technology, that required expensive ultra-advanced tools, huge money to burn, and hundreds to thousands of among the world's best scientists.
