China reveals New Variant of carrier-based Shenyang J-15 fighter jet
China has revealed an upgraded version of the J-15 ship-borne fighter jet, having enhancements in its missile pylons, the infrared search and track system, the radar and the wings.
The upgraded J-15 is capable of operating with catapults and will be the key part of air wings of existing Liaoning and Shandong aircraft carriers as well as upcoming new Type 003 Aircraft Carrier of China.
The new J-15 uses a new type of wingtip pylon similar to the J-16 fighter jet to replace the older type, which was used on the J-11B fighter jet. The new J-15 can carry China's most advanced short-range combat missile PL-10, while the previous version could only launch the older PL-8. The PL-10 is much deadlier than the PL-8, as it can be launched as soon as the pilot sees the target and it is very difficult to evade thanks to its extreme maneuverability and advanced infrared guidance.
The avionics systems of the carrier-borne fighter jet have also been improved and infrared search & track systems in front of the cockpit and the front of the wings are changed. Another major improvement is the replacement of the existing radar with an advanced, active electronically scanned array radar system which enables the use of China's most advanced PL-15 beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile.
The new J-15 will be operated from both China's old aircraft carriers that use ski-jump ramps and new Type 003 aircraft carrier that is expected to be equipped with catapults. The fighter jet will play key roles in both attack and air-to-air combat, and act together with China's upcoming fifth-generation carrier-based fighter jet and early warning aircraft.
The Shenyang J-15, also known as Flying Shark is a Chinese all-weather, twinjet, carrier-based 4th-generation multirole fighter aircraft developed by the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation and the 601 Institute specifically for the People's Liberation Army Naval Air Force to serve on People's Liberation Army Navy's aircraft carriers.
The J-15 Fighter Jet has length of 22.28 meter, wingspan of 15 meter, height of 5.92 meter and maximum takeoff weight of 32500 kg. Powered by 2 Saturn AL-31 turbofan engines, the jet has speed of 2.4 mach, range of 3500 km and service ceiling of 20000 meter.
The avionics onboard fighter jet includes Type 1493 radar with upgraded J15D having Aesa radar and 4-redundant 3-axis fly by wire systems. It has twelve external hardpoints to carry PL-12 medium range air to air missiles, PL-8 short range missiles, YJ-83K anti-ship missile and YJ-83KH land attack missiles in addition to various other type of rockets.
The updated version of J-15 will give further boost to air arm of People’s Liberation Army Navy and will suffice the requirement till induction of upcoming fifth generation FC-31 carrier-borne aircraft of China.
