China reveals New Variant of carrier-based Shenyang J-15 fighter jet

China has revealed an upgraded version of the J-15 ship-borne fighter jet, having enhancements in its missile pylons, the infrared search and track system, the radar and the wings.

The upgraded J-15 is capable of operating with catapults and will be the key part of air wings of existing Liaoning and Shandong aircraft carriers as well as upcoming new Type 003 Aircraft Carrier of China.

The new J-15 uses a new type of wingtip pylon similar to the J-16 fighter jet to replace the older type, which was used on the J-11B fighter jet. The new J-15 can carry China's most advanced short-range combat missile PL-10, while the previous version could only launch the older PL-8. The PL-10 is much deadlier than the PL-8, as it can be launched as soon as the pilot sees the target and it is very difficult to evade thanks to its extreme maneuverability and advanced infrared guidance.

The avionics systems of the carrier-borne fighter jet have also been improved and infrared search & track systems in front of the cockpit and the front of the wings are changed. Another major improvement is the replacement of the existing radar with an advanced, active electronically scanned array radar system which enables the use of China's most advanced PL-15 beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile.

The new J-15 will be operated from both China's old aircraft carriers that use ski-jump ramps and new Type 003 aircraft carrier that is expected to be equipped with catapults. The fighter jet will play key roles in both attack and air-to-air combat, and act together with China's upcoming fifth-generation carrier-based fighter jet and early warning aircraft.

The Shenyang J-15, also known as Flying Shark is a Chinese all-weather, twinjet, carrier-based 4th-generation multirole fighter aircraft developed by the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation and the 601 Institute specifically for the People's Liberation Army Naval Air Force to serve on People's Liberation Army Navy's aircraft carriers.

The J-15 Fighter Jet has length of 22.28 meter, wingspan of 15 meter, height of 5.92 meter and maximum takeoff weight of 32500 kg. Powered by 2 Saturn AL-31 turbofan engines, the jet has speed of 2.4 mach, range of 3500 km and service ceiling of 20000 meter.

The avionics onboard fighter jet includes Type 1493 radar with upgraded J15D having Aesa radar and 4-redundant 3-axis fly by wire systems. It has twelve external hardpoints to carry PL-12 medium range air to air missiles, PL-8 short range missiles, YJ-83K anti-ship missile and YJ-83KH land attack missiles in addition to various other type of rockets.

The updated version of J-15 will give further boost to air arm of People’s Liberation Army Navy and will suffice the requirement till induction of upcoming fifth generation FC-31 carrier-borne aircraft of China.

China recently revealed an upgraded version of the J-15 ship-borne fighter jet that has just wrapped up test flights, with reports saying the new aircraft received enhancements in its missile pylons, the infrared search and track system, the radar and the wings.

The upgraded J-15, potentially capable of operating with catapults, will play key roles on both China's old and new aircraft carriers, experts said on Thursday.

Shenyang Aircraft Co, under the state-owned Aviation Industry Corp of China, on Tuesday published photos on its social media account, introducing its production work as the end of the year approaches.

One of the photos, showing a J-15 fighter jet taxiing on a runway under the assistance of a tug truck, attracted the attention of the media and netizens.

This J-15 has many differences compared with previous ones, and this means it is an upgraded version, eastday.com, a Shanghai-based news website, reported on Wednesday.

Judging from the photo, the new J-15 uses a new type of wingtip pylon - the same type as the J-16 fighter jet - to replace the older type, which was used on the J-11B fighter jet. The new type can carry China's most advanced short-range combat missile, the PL-10, while the previous version could only launch the older PL-8, the report said, noting that the PL-10 is much deadlier than the PL-8, as it can be launched as soon as the pilot sees the target, and it is very difficult to evade thanks to its extreme maneuverability and advanced infrared guidance.

The photo also shows that the infrared search and track systems in front of the cockpit and the front of the wings were changed, which could mean the avionics systems of the new J-15 were improved, eastday.com said.

Another major change is the difference in the radar, as the lightning diverter stripes on the new radome are not the same as the old one, the report pointed out.

This may mean that the upgraded J-15 could have switched to an advanced, active electronically scanned array radar system, which enables the use of China's most advanced PL-15 beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile, eastday.com said.

Since the tug truck was blocking part of the aircraft in the photo, it cannot be confirmed if the upgraded J-15 has eliminated the main pitot tube, or if its nose landing gear is reinforced to operate on a catapult, but it makes sense that it can be launched by catapult, considering China's third aircraft carrier, which is under construction, is expected to be equipped with catapults, analysts said.

The upgraded J-15 is likely a fourth-generation-plus fighter jet, up from the fourth generation, a Chinese military expert told the Global Times on Thursday, requesting anonymity.

It will likely be operable on both China's old aircraft carriers that use ski-jump ramps and new ones that use catapults, the expert predicted, noting that it will play key roles in both attack and air-to-air combat, and act together with China's upcoming fifth-generation carrier-based fighter jet and early warning aircraft.

In another article the Shenyang Aircraft Co released on Wednesday, the company said it had completed all production and test flights for 2021 as of that day, and it set record highs in producing and delivering aircraft.

Update ... this is the real J-11B and most surprising it uses the J-11D's avionics but as it seems still AL-31F engines

Will a variant of the J-15 be eventually equipped with the WS-15 engines? Considering the weight limitations to takeoff from the current two operational PLAN carriers, more powerful engines will allow the fighters to carry more fuel and weapons.

Considering The heavier weight of the J-15D with its electronic warfare equipment, it seems like almost a requirement if the plane is to take off from those two carriers and also carry a decent amount of fuel to be on station to support the other aircraft.

The point is, that according to the latest images - even if I'm still not sure and confused - also the J-15B will retain the old AL-31F engines.

J-16 is land based, the J-15 is based on the carrier. The J-15 on the ski jump carriers need to fly with limitations (either range or payload) and more powerful engines will allow them to fly further as well as more heavily armed. Also, if the carrier is moving slower the fighters may not be able to take off if the engines are not powerful enough. With more powerful engines the plane can take off when the carrier is in different wind conditions as well as traveling below 30 knots.

It will give more flexibility to each of the ski jump carriers ability to project power.

The J-15 taking off from one of the two carriers with a limited weapons load even when it is on the most aft launch position, probably so it can takeoff with more fuel. A major disadvantage if it is to take on more heavily armed fighters.
