China ready to impose tariffs on $60 bn worth of US goods in response to trade threats

China is ready to impose additional tariffs on 60 billion US dollars’ worth of American goods if the US follows through on its threat of increasing tariffs on Chinese imports, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said on Friday.

The ministry said in a statement that the measure was rational and restrained, and was taken after wide public hearings and thorough evaluation.

The decision takes into consideration people’s welfare, the way businesses would handle it, and the need to maintain the normal operation of the global industrial chain.

The two countries implemented tariffs on 34 billion dollars worth of each others’ goods in July. On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump proposed to increase duties on 200 billion US dollars worth of Chinese imports from 10 percent to 25 percent.

Meanwhile, China’s finance ministry unveiled new sets of additional tariffs on 5,207 goods imported from the United States, between 5 to 25 percent.

Ranging from liquefied natural gas to some aircraft, the US goods targeted by China also included semiconductors, some helicopters, condoms, beef, steel products and coffee.

The implementation date of the new tariffs would be determined according to US actions, and China reserves the right to continue to introduce other countermeasures, the ministry noted.

"China always believes that dialogue and negotiation on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit are the only way to resolve trade differences and imbalances," it said.

The statement also noted that any unilateral threat or blackmail would only lead to the intensification of conflict and damage the interests of both sides.

The ministry said that because the US has repeatedly taken escalatory steps, despite the interests of companies and consumers from both sides, China has to take necessary countermeasures to defend the country's dignity, the interests of its people, free trade, the multilateral system and the interests of all countries.

Meanwhile, the statement also emphasized that China will continue its reform and opening-up program, and would look to uphold economic globalization, free trade and multilateral trade.

So what happened to the other $16billion (part of the initial $50bil) maddog trump was going to impose on China? I read the public feedback was really bad.

I guess they are hesitating.

It has also been argued that the proposed 200$ billion will have an actual impact of 50 billion$ on China's exports to the US.

I do hope that the US regime will not back down.

I want to see GM and Apple on the chopping bloc.

My generation have ever experienced war so far, if trade war is counted.

u.s will lose this trade war .trump will end u.s superpower status

Only small medium aircraft, impose on wide body aircraft please.

China, by channeling orders designated for Boeing toward Airbus can also dent any potential US-EU bloc against China -- although such a bloc seems unrealistic as giving in Trump's demands would be the practical end of EU's trade advantages.

200 billion response by mere 60 billion?and already china is finished with 110 billion total. There will be nothing to put tariffs on if trump does another 250 billion and puts tariff on whole 500 billion. At that point china lose the trade war,as of now they still have a chance because of parity.Better to negotiate now. Both sides will suffer, but China cant win this if it gets 25% tariffs on 500 billion. That would cause global mass damage, but also move many supply chains out of china.

Harley-Davidson begins to shut down Kansas factory

US motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson on Friday began to shut down its factory in Kansas City and shift its production to Thailand to avoid EU retaliatory tariffs.

About 180 workers are ready to complete their final work and leave the factory that has been in operation for 20 years, while other staff will stay until next year when the factory is completely shut down.

Harley-Davidson will also transfer its three models currently manufactured in Kansas City to the Pennsylvania factory, leaving 800 workers in Missouri unemployed.

The US motorcycle maker on June 25 decided to move some of its overseas production for EU destinations from US factories to Thailand and other countries to avoid possible EU tariffs of up to 100 million US dollars.

It expects to take at least nine to 18 months to complete additional investments in overseas production facilities.

As a countermeasure against the US steel and aluminum tariffs imposed earlier June, the EU increased US motorcycle tariffs from 6 percent to 31 percent.

Hit by the trade war, Harley-Davidson reported a 6.4-percent profit decline in the second quarter.

Tariffs are working for Thailand

@somsak

200 billion response by mere 60 billion?

These are initial counter measures. China said it reserves rights to introduce other counter-measures as is required.

It is said that the actual impact of 200 billion tariffs will be about 50 billion on actual China exports. -- because a portion of the China exports that are subject to tariffs is done by US companies.

On the other hand, all off the exports from the US are done by US companies. Hence, China's counter-measures can achieve a 1:1 impact.

Besides, so far, only Harley Davidson decided to leave...

Yes, the more US companies in China feel the squeeze the better. Let them deal with psycho trump!
What about the Chinese companies feeling the squeeze, remember China has the surplus,if it's eye for an eye no doubt both will be effected but China having the surplus will be hurt more
