Making advanced chips is hundred if not thousands times harder. You need international cooperation if you want to make chips. But in your case you are a lone wolf. You are going to lose because making Chips is WAAYY EASIER than making atomic bombs, The Chinese are doing it right now, is not a new science for then, is not that they lack expertise in the area. Of course 7nm is harder than 28nm but is not impossible even without an EUV machine which is because its novelty by far the most complex equipment in semiconductor manufacturing,
The only parts that the Chinese are lacking is in EUV Lithography and EDA. EDA is easy. EUV they are working on it.

The core of ASML is Germany Zeiss optics. Not easy to reach the level of Zeiss precision.

But if China can buy lens from Zeiss, that will be another story.

But then US will quickly ban Zeiss sales to China.

It depends on whether Germany is willing to stand up against US.

Another solution is to buy entire company Japan Nikon, though they are inferior to Zeiss. Then build base on Nikon. Transfer the Japan engineers to China. But again Japan and US may block the sales.

Optics is not a insurmountable problem, with computational optics you can do corrections to counter the bad effects optic problems, but of course the better the optics the better the results. But computational lithography is the main driver of this generation of chips, in fact one the biggest secret of ASML is their software. I heard that the biggest bottleneck that the Chinese are having for an EUV machine is the development of a good EUV light source, is not an easy task.

The only way in which the article is comparing China's focus on electronic chips to its focus on building the atomic bomb...is in the sense that China recognizes the importance of this...
...and has decided to give it complete attention(fully realizing that China has to do it alone without any help).

No other parallels were made...in terms of the tech involved. So idk how u arrived at the conclusion that a comparison was somehow made between the tech involved.

Secondly...what other option is there besides increased investment in this field? All the other countries that are on the forefront of chip manufacturing are in the US camp(this includes European countries, Japan, Taiwan, and US itself)...so China has no option but to go it alone. Therefore ur criticism of China's decision to increase investment in this field is pointless...
...what alternative solution do u propose? Sit idly by and do nothing?
