China Opens World’s Coolest Library With 1.2 Million Books, And Its Interior Will Take Your Breath Away

2 days ago by James Gould-Bourn

Nobody likes to be watched while they’re trying to read a book, but we’re willing to make an exception if it means getting to visit this stunning new library in China, because as you can see below, the incredible structure has a giant spherical auditorium in the middle that looks just like a giant eye.

Located in the Binhai Cultural District In Tianjin, the five-story library, which was designed by Dutch design firm MVRDV in collaboration with the Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute (TUPDI) and has since been dubbed “The Eye of Binhai”, covers 34,000 square metres and can hold up to 1.2 million books. Taking just three years to complete, the library features a reading area on the ground floor, lounge areas in the middle sections and offices, meeting spaces, and computer/audio rooms at the top. We’re not sure how much studying we’d get done though – we’d be far too busy marveling at the awesome architecture!

This isn’t the first time we’ve written about the endlessly creative MVRDV. Click here to read about their giant scaffold staircase and here for their beautiful market hall in Rotterdam.

. . . . . . .
Wow, it's like we are living in the future.

But the future is now.

A very beautiful library. An infrastructure marvel.

Our disagreements aside, we in India really appreciate the pace at which you have modernised your infrastructure. The first key to starting changes in infrastructure of the country is to acknowledge the defects in the existing system and infrastructure - Which your governments did over time and learnt from their past mistakes. They worked hard to build the country you are building.

Whether you acquired debts to build the infrastructure or not, today your country's infrastructure fuels the world's construction boom. That is admirable. I distinctly remember that in 1996 when USA had bombed Chinese embassy in Belgrade, you guys protested using the means established by the bigger powers. Nothing happened. So your governments kept that in mind and worked towards achieving par excellence with US and even exceeding it in many areas.

That, dear Chinese friends, is very appreciable. While we may have disagreements as members of our respective countries on certain issues which are deemed sensitive by both China and India, we Indians certainly admire and look up to China when it comes to three things:

1- Expeditious military capacity build up
2- Urban planning and infrastructure management
3- Supply of both internal and external, civil and defence logistics

You people have earned the respect that the world gives you.

And in the points that I stated here, India also admires you.

A culture that is willing to elevate persuit of Knowledge to the height of Art is indeed a living and thriving culture.

By creating such masterpieces of Art for Knowledge the Chinese are making a very clear statement!

Wonder how many can understand this pronoucement...

Just one more evidence of the Longest Living Civilisation!!!

Way to go Chinese Friends!!!!
