China on Tuesday said that the “door is open” for discussions over the admission of India and other non-NPT (non-proliferation treaty) countries to the NSG.
It, however, slammed the United States for supporting India’s bid, saying it was one of those who made the rule against the entry of non-NPT countries into NSG.
“I have not seen the US statement supporting India. But US is one of those who made the rule that non-NPT countries should not join the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG),” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying told a media briefing.
Later, Hua reiterated that admission of new members is not on the agenda of the NSG meeting in Seoul.
“The door is open. The room is there. We never said we are against who (a country). We did not target any country, India or Pakistan,” Hua said.
The United States had earlier publicly exhorted members of the NSG to support the membership of India.
State Department spokesperson John Kirby said in a press briefing that the US has not changed its stand regarding India’s membership in the elite group.
“Well, as you know, during Prime Minister Modi’s visit, the President welcomed India’s application to join the NSG and reaffirmed that India is ready for membership. We continue to call – and nothing’s changed about our position. We continue to call on the participating governments of the NSG to support India’s application at the plenary session this week in Seoul,” he said.
Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar had made a two-day trip to China on June 16 and 17 to discuss India’s NSG membership with his Chinese counterpart. This visit came days ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on June 23 when both leaders will attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation leaders’ meeting in Tashkent.
China has maintained that more talks were needed to build a consensus on which countries can join the 48-nation NSG following the United States’ push to include India in the elite group.

And here I thought after reading some articles & comments on this forum that Chinese were going to lock up Indian delegation and beat them up with a baseball bat.

as per pakistanisage it is pipe dream for India to get into NSG... looking forward for his reactions later...

let's wait for the D-day to see what happens. I don't think china want's to be the only one in the group to oppose India's entry, which wouldn't surely go well with Delhi. The new found strength of china, is largely thanks to its economic growth, unless India closes this gap, we will always be at the receiving end.

Whatever is in the article is what Pakistani stance is. The admission into NSG should be "criteria" based not country specific. If non NPT countries , such as PAKISTAN, wants to join NSG, then there should be discussion within NSG on procedures and criteria to pave the way for this to happen.

America wanted to rush the Indian case in NSG and this has been scuttled by China. With more discussion will come more clarity about the procedures of entry into NSG. This under the table, through the backdoor entry of India wont be happening. In nutshell, India wont be going into NSG without Pakistan joining the club.

You should give up your dream of coming with the parity of india. We dont come in same category, so its not mandatory what india gets pakistan will get by default.

We got waiver already, show me your documents of waiver and only then talk about equal treatment.

Show the documents or leave the table.

An entirely anticipated piece of hypocrisy, and one that will disappoint only the most naive of those following events. China has had no difficulty in adapting every single aspect of international law to suit her own ends, or in advocating an entirely Sino-centric approach to every single issue that concerns the world.

WE do NOT "dream" to be like you pathetic country. We have global reach and our own space which we created for ourselves. India for us is a pretext to reach higher. We build our muscle using you as pretext to achieve global reach. And same is the case with the NSG as well. you are a stepping stone for us which will be under our feet as we take steps to go higher.

With regards to your wavier, let me educate you. Its only when GOP of that time, the Zardari regime, withdrew its "letter of objection" to NSG regarding the wavier, ONLY then you managed to get in. China to the last moment was asking GOP to block American move but when GOP itself withdrew the objection letter, they let the wavier go. You were dependent on Pakistan back in 2008 for its nod, and you will again if you ever wish to be granted NSG membership. Watch the Sartaj Aziz interview in the link below, this is explained in detail as to what happened back in 2008. People are considering those as traitors who allowed the 2008 move to go unchecked in Pakistan.

And why is china is changing statements every day.
Yesterday it said the issue is not up for discussion in seoul, today it says it is.
It is acting like a immature nation or in layman terms its acting like rakhi sawant, who only wants to be in the news for whatever reasons.

Here I have some problem with your analogy. Pakistan was not a member of NSG. Then how come you object or give no objection for Waiver ?? Pls clarify me with legalities involved in NSG .

There is something called letter of objection which Pakistan raised with NSG initially but for some unknown reasons it was withdrawn after which Chinese let it pass as well. It is known fact that even then China was asking Pakistan if to block American move but Pakistani government of that time, the Zardari regime, didnt show any interest.
