What's new

China offers Bangladesh soft loans of $15-20b

Something India cant match China is finance might. :D

China has never been shy of rallying to support BD sincerely. India's credits are forced down our throat because their terms are terrible. We don't need funds from a nation herself in heavy debt world-wide. Moreove, even if the banya pays one poisa, he keeps on bragging and bragging. The truth is that their corrupt politicos and bureaucrats lure ours to skim off major amounts from these deals.

.
Of course it will affect the people. All projects mentioned are roads, bridges and railway lines. Naturally, the common people uses these. There will be a rise in toll taxes and railway fare.
If BD politicians do not involve in mud slinging then govt can recover the amount and pay back the loan. Or else it gonna affect the Fiscal position of BD govt. 2% pa is too much. BD needs to negotiate a better deal.
yes THEY ARE STILL NEGOTIATING IT BRO.

Hmm....you have a valid point there. But I said not directly. These rail roads are gonna be used to carry passengers But mainly for trade goods.if you see the proposed routes, you will see that, these are the most important trade lines too.For Example :-

1.Jessor(Benapol-Petrapol is in jessor border) -Rajabari-Padma Bridge.
2.Ishawardi-to Dhaka
3.Mymensing-Joydevpur-Dhaka
4.Dhaka-Chittagong-Ghumdum,Teknaf( Myanmar border) (also proposed Trans Asian Highway route)

these new infrastructure will attract the trades, with easy, reliable transportaions and supply of capital goods.Means more trade and more jobs and money for people. And most of the costs will be coming from these trades. That's why I said it won't affect the mass people Directly rather indirectly. As I say this I also think its only time we decide a resonable railway fair,we can't expect world class with such low and politically decided fairs.and If PEOPLE can earn money from these extra trades they shoudn't have any problem with giving additional fairs.

But we have to wait and watch what comes out.

I think with the money, it makes sense for India for joining bangladesh in creating east asian highway which is already in progress. Imagine, India, BD, Myanmar, Thai, Combodia, Viets connected by highway and railway route. Trade will boom.

I'm disappointed with China. I'd once hold high respect for that nation but they have been making some awful decision by signing deal with illegal Awami government led by Bharti bandi badsurat hasina. Bd people will procure same mindset regarding China like they having one for cow mata Bharat.

China is wise nation. They must consider the ground reality and work with democratically elected government only.

China knows the ground reality and they know AL will not hand over power in a foreseeable future. Now lets all get along with that.

Future is not known. Mujib thought the same but got busted. Only time will tell.

The Awami League is here to stay and the Chinese are buying it.

The political party in charge in BD does not matter.... this is economics and it makes sense to make capital investments .... this will help BD develop in the longrun.... lets keep politics out of it ..... I hate BAL but if they can increase BD GDP and improve the lot of our population so be it....

Any idea about the transparency of the deal?

Thats what i'd like to know as well. The Pakistanis took Chinese money and didn't get what they were promised, ie Pakistani trains or ports. That being said, its an issue on both sides. Scrutiny is needed, if the Chinese are able to make money there, why was Japan or another nation with available funds not able to invest harder?

Or Japan, Gernamny or America. Because leftovers are not as good.

AFAIK thats on the table, Bangaldesh is center to a Delhi Dhaka Yangoon trade route. Its also something Dhaka doesn't need forign investment for. Right now though we are waiting on potiental from Burma to unlock trade with South Asia which will happen gradually over the next decade.
