Where we were 10 years back? Ok, let me tell you where we were 10 years back:
- toilet is NO scarcity to ordinary people
- beautiful girls could walk alone safely on the city streets after 10 or 11pm
- Mortality rate for under-5 children (per 1,000 live births) is 19. (FYI, the same rate for India by 2015 is 50)
- Sufficient power supplies even to the poorest families
- ~50,000 km expressway network, e.g. driving time Shanghai to Beijing reduced to ~12 hours (1,200 km long).
- 63 medals won in the 2004 summer Olympics, 32 gold, 17 silver and 14 bronze
- illiterate rate about 5% (most of the illiterate people are those elders who born before the foundation of PRC). BTW, when we Chinese talk about illiterate, those who can only write or read few characters, e.g. own names, are still counted as illiterate, like my grandmother. An un-illiterate person should at least be able to read the newspapers, like the following one:
