Hu Xijin, editor in chief of the Global Times, called on China to build more nuclear missiles as the country is facing unprecedented security challenges from the US.

China must be prepared to deal with the next more extreme adventures by the US, Hu wrote in his Sina Weibo account Sunday.

"Hurry up and build more nuclear missiles to deter the US lunatics," reads the post. "China having more powerful nuclear arsenal is the most important leverage to keep American arrogance below a safety line. Nothing else is very effective."

In the post, Hu stressed that China will not give up its efforts to resolve various issues through consultation with the US, "however, it is not up to us. With the US suppressing further, we cannot rule out the possibility that clashes break out between China and the US in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Straits. There will be a contest of wills between China and the US, and sufficient nuclear weapons are an indispensable pillar of China's will," Hu wrote.

At a time when the US is pressing closer, China's national security is facing unprecedented challenges, reads the post, "China was forced to increase its nuclear arsenal, which many people in the world can understand. China must not tie its own hands and make a big mistake."

China definitely has at least 1000 nuclear weapons hidden in their massive underground network. I'm sure US intelligence heavily suspects this (although no hard proof) ... otherwise why would Trump push so hard for China to be a nuclear arms control treaty. I think last year the DoD said Chinese nuclear weapons count doubled in the past ten years, so from around 300 to over 600. With that being said, I still can't believe how many people continue to be fooled by the 300 nuke count lol.

The total yield of a Minutemen missile is about 1.2 MT while the total yield of one DF-5 missile is about 5MT.

The whole point of deterrence is your enemy knows you can vaporize him at the press of a button. The fact that this topic has been brought up by state media over and over again (it used to be a taboo topic) means this is a signal we are ready to show our capabilities to avoid a misunderstanding. Those are pretty old statistics ... if anything China probably has considerably more nuclear tonnage given the pace they've been building up their arsenal. Trump did not seek actively seek China's participation in a nuclear arms control agreement for no reason. The US rightfully suspects the Chinese arsenal is way bigger than stated.

You're right 50 years is too generous ... I think the discrepancy is more like 75 years. Let's be honest though, the Indian nuclear weapon designs are basically those of the 50s, as are their delivery system.
