Celebrating Columbus Day is equivalent to celebrating stupidity!!

Not to mention that Columbus was also one of the cruelest people out there having enslaved and tortured the Africans to serve as his expeditionary slaves!

Its not even amateur historians, there is no legitimacy, just profit motive. Its the reason Menzies is publishing book after book while ignoring the expert's (and even amateur's) rebuttals. If anyone believes it, well, Gavin is smiling all the way to the bank!

Menzies book fits the general trend of stupidity and conspiracy theories flourishing post 9/11. Menzies has been rebutted by scholar from both China and the West.

Even if you wish to see this from a European perspective, then it is proven now that the Vikings "discovered" the Americas 500 years before Columbus.

Yes, I think I saw something on TV about that. It was about a stone with Viking engravings and other artifacts in the American midwest. Is that what you are talking about.

I have read that before and there was a pretty good article on Nat Geo about this. But that is migration, and not necessarily a discovery. If you extend that logic, Africans discovered the entire world!

No doubt it is annoying that the 'credit' for discovering Americas goes to Columbus. However, it was due to Columbus' multiple voyages to the "new world" (once it was realized that it was NOT India) initiated awareness and greater contact between the natives and the Europeans. That contact led to what is now the USA, 'Mehico', South american countries etc.

Yes there were previous voyages to the continent by various people, most notably the Vikings. However the purpose of such voyages was to loot and plunder any villages (if any) and people for personal profit.

Giving credit where it is due, what Columbus did was set into motion the process for colonization of the land mass by the Europeans. And that is what is celebrated about Columbus, not his cruelty or stupidity.

Gotta give it to Columbus to set sail to find a new westward route to India when at the time it was thought that Earth was flat and his ship would fall off the edge of the Earth!!
