Iraq beats China 1-0 in World Cup qualifying

BEIJING (AP)
Younis Mahmoud scored in the 45th minute to lead 10-man Iraq to a valuable 1-0 away win over China in Asian World Cup qualifying Tuesday.

With this loss, China's basically eliminated, as China has to play away games against teams that already beat China.

Don't worry, China will get its chance to play in the World Cup within 16 years, as FIFA is eager to give a game to China and China gets to play in the World Cup as the host country like South Africa.

The outlook of Chinese national soccer is pretty bad for the next 10 years.

On top of the Chinese national soccer team on the verge of being eliminated from the 2014 World Cup, China's Under-23 Olympic soccer team was eliminated from 2012 London Olympics after showing a dismal performance at qualifier matches. It is the Under-23 Olympic soccer team that will represent China at world stage for the next 10 years, and these players are terrible too.

Football is not the most popular sport in China, is it?
If it is not, there would be no strange at all.

Actually it is. And that popularity makes China's professional soccer weak, as it breeds corruption at all levels, from the players trying to advance from school to the pro-league and several tens of billions of dollar a year soccer gambling industry that fixes the matches.

The way the current Chinese soccer system is set up, China's Messi from a poor village is working at the field digging out potato because he couldn't pay off his highschool coach to get a recommendation to go to the college soccer team, while the untalented children of rich and powerful make the national squad.

If soccer was not a mega-money sport, then players would be selected based on personal merits and China would be dominating it like it does in Ping Pong, diving, and gymnastics.

Soccer Gambling Thrives in China

As of Saturday, police have already confiscated $102 million in illegal funds and arrested some 3,600 suspects for illegal gambling in connection with the World Cup, according to a report by the state-run Xinhua news agency.

Illicit gambling in Chinese soccer seems about as common as shin guards, and experts have said it’s also a key reason China hasn’t done well on the international soccer stage. Both performance and credibility has suffered amid accusations of match fixing and rumors that players pay for spots on the national roster.

While Chinese officials like to blame foreigners for the illegal activities, corruption has a long history in Chinese soccer.

Traditionally, national-team hopefuls had to pay tens of thousands of yuan in bribes, said Rowan Simons, author of a book on soccer in China, according to CNN.

“Players have come out and said they can’t play for the national team because they can’t afford it,” he said, according to the report.

“There’s corruption at every single level of the game,”
Simons told CNN. “It’s an indictment of wider Chinese society and representative of a much bigger problem with corruption and nepotism.”

The joke among Chinese soccer fans.

"Where are China's Leo Messi and Wayne Rooney?"
"Out in the field digging out vegetable because they couldn't afford to pay their highschool coaches for a recommendation".

Sound like in Vietnam, the only difference is that Vietnamese junior football players don't have to pay for any fees. The Vietnamese decided to reconstruct their football-related system for the next season, hope the same thing for Chinese.
