China launches new Hefei-Bengbu high-speed railway

India needs to wait and see how the profitability of this project manifests in the short and medium term.

Indian railways profitability is always fluctuating. The cost to build such projects is far more costly than say adding another 1000 ,500 seater airbus with already in place airport infrastructure. and the energy consumption is almost similar.

Chinese projects are more glory related than cost analyzed. We need to wait and observe ,and if profitable then learn from the Chinese.

You forgot that China is a socialist country, sometimes cost is not the first thing to consider, especially when it is related to national economy and the people's livelihood, then to meet the demands is the first priority.
on the other hand, most of us regard that chinese railway is profitable due to high requirement; a passenger has to order or buy a tickety several days before the itinerary in order to confirm a seat.

And what is your source of information given 8 yrs are more than sufficient to at least pull a single line.

"8 years" is a optimistic estimate I guess. seems you guys dont know yourselves too well.

The highway department employs one person for every 1.5 miles of road, which is among the highest ratios of worker-to-road in the world. Many of these employees do not bother to turn up for work since they cannot be sacked. Any attempt to offer voluntary layoff to public sector workers prompts an outcry about abuse of worker rights. There is little such outrage about what happens every day to the produce of Uttar Pradesh’s far poorer and far more numerous farmers. But even if the state’s road maintenance crews did regularly report for duty, the government in Lucknow, the historic capital of UP. Would still be unable to equip them with enough tools for the job, such as steamrollers and tarmac, because it already spends most of its road budget on salaries. The employees of the UP highway department are paid more than three times the market rate.

The same pattern is visible in numerous public sector departments across much of India. Perhaps uncoincidentally, this inefficiency is particularly visible in the poorest states of the north. In their development programs. India’s poorest states have a ratio of 70 cents of direct spending to every $1 spent on salaries. This is before accounting for what is euphemistically described as the cost of “leakage,” otherwise known as corruption. To put it starkly, the amount spent on the salaries of a few million employees is far greater than what is directly spent on all antipoverty measures for hundreds of millions of people.

There is an even bigger item of fraudulent accounting on India’s books: public subsidies. We have observed what happens to food subsidies The same applies to fertilizer subsidies, the second subsidy item in New Delhi’s annual budget. If al of India/s “pro-poor” suibsidies are added together and evaluated, 2/3 of subsidy spending is is ‘non-merit” in the felicitous words of the Indian government itself. This means the subsidies go to the nonpoor and often to the rich.

You need 3 years to conduct a bloody feasibility study,5 years to get budget approval,10 years to acquire the land, and 10 years to build a 300km long stretch。

2020 is the most optimistic estimate considering how slowly things are getting done in India。

That's right. Democratic governments are horrible in developing public infrastructure.

Even in Australia, every public transport project has an over-blown budget and misses the deadline.
America is much worse, and India is even worse than America.

Why is direct profitability such a big deal. If we consider profitability, then we should not spend anything on military. A faster railway will have huge impacts on economy so there's an overall profitability, even if railway department doesn't get enough ticket sales to cover the cost. Not to mention how convenient it is for over 1 billion people. When talking about profitability, I think we should look into the big picture instead.

There can be delay but project will be handled by private sector and Government intent to fast-track it.

That's right. Democratic governments are horrible in developing public infrastructure.

America is much worse, and India is even worse than America.

We like the way it is in the democratic setup.
