China launches cargo train service to Poland

Indeed. Sucks for them that they have incompatible track width. But it's only logical that they change, and not China and Europe. Indeed, any new rail lines (like purpose built hsr lines) need to be build with standard gage.

Yes, but Kazakhstan for example doesn't need 'help'. China is already 'helping' them by buying up all their oil and gas and making them rich. Kazakhstan itself has a vision of being a transit country (aside from selling oil and gas), like a big Eurasian bridge. Part of that vision is adapting to modern standards. Or do you think it's okay for a train to change tracks 10 times before reaching it's destination?

I also support that the system should be standardised. Either the central Asians states or Poland/China have to change the system to adapt so that it is easier and faster. All will benefit from this system. This good for all the region. I'm just against calling entire nations as stupid just because they have a slightly different system.

You're right and I was wrong. And even though it might not sound fair, we all know who 'has' to change it's gage.

Err, it's not only Poland using the standard gauge, from Lisbon to Warsaw and from Xijinag to Hainan, it's all standard gauge. Only the former Soviet states have broad gauge.

any reason for that other the former Soviet were afraid same gauge track will make it easier for enemies to invade?

I think converting the wide gage to the standard gage in the "stans" is purely a political issue rather than a economic issue. It is the territory of the bear, which all were invaded by Russia hundreds of years ago, and the bear still has the dream of Soviet 2.0. Russia is still very alert to Europe and China. So the own choice these stan countries is most important to convert the gage.

China Europe railway benefits central China
08-17-2015 17:07 BJT

China Europe Express Railway cuts transportation time and provides better trade access to businesses in central and west China. Companies used to be limited because of their distance from ports and the coast.

Zhu xiangli runs a porcelain company in Central China's Hunan Province.

Since China and Europe railway line started operation, she has picked up many clients along the way from Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan.

It used to take 2 months to transport porcelain to Turkmenistan from Hengyang city of Hunan by shipping. But now it only takes about half a month through the railway.

"I suggest that you use railway transportation, because it's very convenient in China. The whole transportation process will only take 15 to 16 days. Very fast," Zhu said.

Zhu started her business in 2013 and has already developed many clients from 6 countries along the railway line. It has largely cut down her company's export cycle. Now even businesses from coastal cities such as Fo Shan in Guangdong Province want to use the railway instead of sea shipping.

"We can depart from Nanjing, or go to Xi'an and depart from there. Some set off from Zhengzhou, or Lian Yun Gang port," said Huo Jinxiang, general manager of International Department of Guangdong Xin Zhong Yuan Porcelain.

Ho said transportation cost for a container is down to 22 thousand yuan from 30 thousand. Lower costs have made these firms more competitive in global trade.

China's one belt one road initiative brings world's attention to transportation between China and Europe. China Europe Express Railway will make trade between the two continents more convenient.

Hamburg is one of the world's largest ports, and Germany's largest railway hub.

The city is also a commercial hub, with over 150 thousands private business. This can be translated into every 1 out of 10 residents in Hamburg owns a company.

Hamburg also hosts one fifth of the country's top 500 companies.

It's an important stop along the China Europe Express Railway line.

"Normally Chinese goods come into Europe from Hamburg harbour. Hamburg is a window of Europe to China. Now China Europe Express provides great opportunity, and more choices. Hamburg has great advantage in terms of transportation for trade between the two continents, or dispatching goods to inner Europe," said Olaf Scholz, mayor of Hamburg.

Chinese companies have started to set up booths in Hamburg since 1980s. And now the port town is already an important base for Chinese traders.

"According to HWF Hamburg Business Development Corporation, about 520 Chinese firms are registered in the city. Some big state owned companies from China have established their headquarters in Hamburg. Business of these Chinese firms are mainly focused on trade, shipping and logistics. In recent years, there are new developments in Machinery, high-tech innovative industries," said Sun Congbin, general consul of Consulate General of China in Hamburg, Germany.

Trade between China and Europe has exceeded 600 billion US dollars last year, accounting for 14 percent of China's overall trade volume. One third of that is trade between China and Germany, with value worth over 180 billion US dollars.
