After the US, India poses the 2nd biggest threat to peace in Asia. WASHINGTON, July 7: Pakistan has the world`s fastest-growing nuclear stockpile and it could achieve 150-200 warheads in a decade, says a report released on Thursday.

The report, published by the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, notes that despite political and economic instability, Pakistan has been “steadily expanding its nuclear capabilities and competencies”.

The bulletin is run by the world`s leading nuclear scientists opposing atomic weapons and also maintains the famous doomsday clock. In its latest issue, two top American experts Hans M. Kristensen and Robert S. Norris estimate that “Pakistan has a nuclear weapons stockpile of 90-110 warheads, an increase from the estimated 70-90 warheads in 2009”.

The authors quote from a US Defence Intelligence Agency report, which projected in 1999 that by 2020 Pakistan would have 60-80 warheads. But the authors claim that Pakistan appears to have reached that level in 2006 or 2007, more than a decade ahead of predictions.

In January 2011, the New York Times published an official US estimate of “deployed” Pakistani weapons, which ranged from the mid-90s to more than 110

“With four new delivery systems and two plutonium production reactors under development, however, the rate of Pakistan`s stockpile growth may increase further over the next 10 years,” the authors argue in their paper, “Pakistan`s nuclear forces 2011”.

The authors, however, say that Pakistan lacks enough delivery vehicles to accommodate 160-240 warheads. According to them, Pakistan may be producing 120-180kg of highly enriched uranium per year, an amount sufficient for 7-15 warheads. The uranium ore is mined at several locations throughout Pakistan, with more mines scheduled to open in the future.
