China: Japan's naming of Diaoyu islands illegal, invalid

‪#‎China‬ is protesting ‪#‎Japan‬’s decision to name five islets belonging to the‪ #‎Diaoyu‬ Islands, saying that the move is illegal and invalid. The complaint comes after Tokyo announced that it would name 158 uninhabited islets in the chain.

"China resolutely opposes Japan's move to undermine its territorial sovereignty as the Diaoyu Islands and its affiliated islands are China's territory and have already been named by the country," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in a statement.

Qin's comments came hours after Japan named five islets belonging to the Diaoyu Islands.

China-Japan relations have soured since the Japanese government's "purchase" of the Diaoyu Islands in September 2012.

What specific international law that prohibits Japan from naming those islands??? Is there a local Chinese law that prohibits naming those islands???

I believe that the Government of Japan is referring to Terra Nullius.

Let us define Terra Nullius - Terra nullius is a Latin term that means land belonging to no one or no man's land. In international law, a territory which has never been subject to the sovereignty of any state, or over which any prior sovereign has expressly or implicitly relinquished sovereignty is terra nullius. Sovereignty over territory which is terra nullius can be acquired through occupation. International sea, and celestial bodies would come under the term terra nullius.

USA position is that it has no position on the sovereignty of the disputed islands in the East China Sea but acknowledges that it is under the administration of Japan.

I think the territorial dispute has quiet down a lot since 2012.
