China jails Uighur scholar Ilham Tohti for life for 'separatism'

BEIJING: The lawyer for an outspoken scholar from China's Uighur minority said on Tuesday his client has been found guilty of separatism and sentenced to life in jail.

The Urumqi People's Intermediate Court sentenced scholar Ilham Tohti on Tuesday after a two-day trial. Separatism carries sentences from three years to death in China.

Ilham Tohti was known as a moderate voice who spoke out about the plight of Uighurs under majority Han Chinese rule.

Tensions have run high in the far western region of Xinjiang where many of China's Uighurs live.

Authorities said several explosions killed two people on Sunday in central Xinjiang but didn't say who carried out the attacks. Police said 43 people died in May when Uighur militants drove through a market in the regional capital of Urumqi and hurled explosives.

You call for separatism in China and you get a slap on the wrist by only getting life in prison?

This scumbag should be sentenced to death.

Chinese government is far too soft on these terrorists, separatists and extremists. By giving only prison time, you encourage others to do it since prison isn't as bad as death. While in jail they will get their Western NGO's to glorify them as 'heroes' for fighting against the 'evil han' and start more chaos.

Not only should the instigator be punished but his entire family should face punishment. His children, spouse, parents, siblings, etc should face travel bans, education certificates revoked, banned from getting loans, banned from getting a job, etc.

China needs to get a lot more ruthless if it is to eradicate this scum.

according to me tibet is a non-issue for india , but if china tries to interfere in arunachal pradesh then we must rake up tibet , especially when it clams AP to be southern tibet .

worldwide it has been seen a muslim population often tends to change the demographics of a multicultural society , they don't mix up with other sections of the society and have a very divisive mentality , you can see that even with muslims who settled in developed countries like aus & usa , they first come in as immigrants , demand for equal rights & all benefits , increase their population and once their numbers cross a threshold level they start targeting other communities . There is very little they contribute to the nation they live in if its non-islamic .

we can't be hypocritical in our approach by criticizing china on uighur and israel on palestine while we kill mujahideens in kashmir .
