New Delhi: China has grant[ed] normal visas to four journalists who were born in Jammu and Kashmir, a state that Beijing considers to be a disputed area. The journalists are accompanying Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on his China tour.
Singh will leave for Sanya in China on Tuesday for the Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa (BRICS) Summit.
China has been issuing stapled visas to Jammu and Kashmir residents since 2008.
A senior Chinese official, Vice Minister Ai Ping said that that the decision to resolve the stapled visa issue came during Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to India in December 2010.
"When Premier Wen Jiabao visited India and took notice of the concerns expressed by the Indian side, he said he took notice of that. But for our two countries, we should have a larger perspective for bilateral relations. I am very confident the very capable diplomats of both countries are taking care of the specific issues between our two countries," said Ai Ping.
In August 2010, India issued a demarche to Beijing and hit back by canceling a scheduled visit by a Chinese military delegation for a course at the National Defence College over denial of visa to Indian Army's General Officer Commanding, Northern Command, Lt Gen BS Jaswal. A subsequent visit by Indian military officials to China was also canceled by India.
