China Is Reportedly Developing Quantum Radar to Detect Stealth Jets

The late Carl Sagan once said: "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence."
And scientists in China are reportedly developing a new quantum radar technology that could detect stealth aircraft by creating a small electromagnetic storm, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Radars, a China-based peer-reviewed publication, reports the South China Morning Post.
However, this isn't the first time researchers from China have made big claims about a functional quantum radar, and many experts from other countries contest the very feasibility of such devices, suggesting that this could represent a technological bluff.
So take this with a grain of salt.

China makes big claims about a functional 'quantum radar'

Conventional radars have a fixed or rotating dish, but the quantum radar design more closely resembles a gun, and accelerates electrons to nearly the speed of light. Once they pass through a winding tube exposed to strong magnetic fields, the electrons could generate a vortex of microwaves that swirl forward like a horizontal tornado, according to the report. If successfully completed, the novel quantum radar system would outclass any radar system of the past, but that's still a big "if", according to Tsinghua University's Zhang Chao and his team, in the aerospace engineering school. But the potential benefits are worth the hard work, according to the team of scientists. The "better the stealth technology, the higher the gain" of the quantum radar system, they added, in the SCMP report.

However, the fundamental particles employed in this artificial electromagnetic storm would exhibit weird properties, added the researchers. In the study, each particle retained a spiraling momentum that didn't drop as time went on and distance increased. Einstein's work predicates that this isn't physically possible, but the researchers emphasized that quantum mechanics bypass the late physicist's theories, enabling the system to detect targets that conventional radar would never see. And it not only works from a great distance, but also during inclement weather.

'Quantum radar' may actually be a bluff from China

If the system really works, and is implemented in contested airspace, it could become a significant advantage. Even today, most planes can't disguise their signature from radar because they reflect electromagnetic waves. Stealth aircraft like the United States' F-22 Raptor or F-35 fighter jets, for example, absorb a large portion of the radar waves via a special coating material which, combined with minimal right angles in the external structure of the vehicle, can reduce a radar signal to an object the size of a baseball. Stealth technology like this has proved a distinct advantage against other nations' airpower that rely mainly on 20th-century jet fighters that lack stealth features.

However, recent years have seen military radar increase in sensitivity, possibly high enough to detect even stealth aircraft. But, in turn, novel metamaterials have further enhanced stealth capabilities, reducing aircraft visibility even more. And, if stealth technology continues to improve, some believe it will advance beyond the detection capabilities of any radar. This is why weapons engineers proposed quantum radar as a potential solution to the detection dilemma, more than a decade ago. Military scientists in China said they were already testing a quantum radar prototype in 2016, but this has been hotly contested by legitimate scientific authorities. A report published in Science Magazine last year argued that quantum radar may never be deployed for long-range uses like tracking stealth airplanes, since experiments have seen critical flaws — one of which suggested such devices only work near absolute zero — which obviously far below the temperature of China's skies. "I am convinced that when [China] announced their quantum radar it was not working," said Fabrice Boust, a radar specialist and physicist from France's aerospace agency, ONERA, in the 2020 Science Magazine report. "But they knew they would get a reaction." Well, if this is what China wants, it's working.

Quantum radar can indeed detect stealth fighters, but stealth fighters will not be obsolete.
In fact, in August 2016, China's quantum radar prototype has been successfully developed. But until now, China has only launched quantum satellites for radar, and quantum radar has not yet entered the practical stage.
China's quantum technology has been the first in the world, and China's quantum technology is ahead of the USA about 10 years. If China has not deployed quantum radar, it will be even more impossible for other countries.
In the future, only a few countries may have quantum radar. The 5G fighter will still have great advantages.

As for those who think China is bluffing.
They may have forgotten something, I suggest they look through history.
China has fulfilled every plan and promise. The Chinese don't like boasting, and the Chinese don't bluff.
Those who think China is bluffing will pay a price, for example, Churchill, MacArthur and Nehru.

Quantum radar working mode

Quantum radar works on the entangled photon principle.. where the flying object is monitored by a particle of light or a photon, which is based on the theory of quantum electrodynamics, which relates to the interaction between atoms and molecules on the distribution of electrons around the nucleus of an atom, and the forces between atoms or molecules are electrical forces, and therefore explain all the phenomena associated With the presence of matter and its interaction with the electromagnetic field, so this means that quantum radar is able to monitor everything that moves in the ocean of the spatial space or the atmosphere. Unlike traditional radar, which works by radio electromagnetic waves, which bounce off solid objects only. This gives the quantum radar a high ability to scan and monitor down to the smallest details (the type of flying object). It is noteworthy that Lockheed Martin has a registered patent for quantum radar and is developing types of it even for spacecraft, not just ground stations or aircraft.

But there is another possibility for future stealth fighter aircrafts:

Which is Radar & optical invisibility!

The element of optical invisibility besides radar invisibility, and the question that arises here: Can the plane be visually hidden from the eyes as it was hidden from the radar? And the answer lies in using the “metamaterial” technology, or super matter.

Plasmonic metamaterials assembled on the 2 × 4 HT: (a) 30 nm AuNP monomer (top) and hexamer (bottom) assembled on a hexagon tile; (b) 30 nm AuNP superlattices assembled on hexagonal 2D lattices and tubes occupying type-1 cavity; (c) 30 nm AuNP superlattices assembled on hexagonal 2D lattices and tubes occupying type-2 cavity; (d) simulated and experimental dark-field scattering spectra of the 30 nm AuNP hexamer structure; (e) spatial distribution of electric field displacement (E) at the wavelength of magnetic response of the 30 nm AuNP hexamer structure; (f) Experimental and simulated (inset figure) UV−vis absorption spectra of single 30 nm AuNP and 30nm_Au_2D_2 superlattice; experimental measurement reveals a 15.5 nm red-shift of the 30nm_Au_2D_2 superlattice compared with a single 30 nm AuNP, which matches well with simulated result of a 14.9 nm red-shift; (g) electric field intensity (|E| 2 ) distribution within a unit of the 30nm_Au_2D_2 superlattice. The spatial distribution of coupled electric field intensity is well revealed between AuNPs.

This technology emerged from Quantum Physics as well, which is related to the components of the atom and below. Therefore, this material or body acquires its electromagnetic properties through its composition, not from its constituent materials, and this is related to nanotechnology and thus can control the process of its interaction with light through Macromolecular Engineering or supermolecule (or supramolecular assemblies) of a substance by diverting it from its straight path so as to make the body completely invisible.

By generating that magnetic field, it is also possible to deflect the radar waves from the vehicle that is intended to be undetected, and thus become radar and optically hidden.

China is spending hundreds of billion but still struggling to complete with TSMC on technological level when it comes to manufacturing chips. Reason being TSMC is dependent on European companies, which are using American parts. It takes Total of 70 industrial discipline to manufacture a chip.

Absolutely wrong. China in past neglect this area becos the American are supplying for the commercial level with uninterrupted cooperation. But Huawei and ZTE ban changes that. Its not that we do not have the tech, it just we are late!

Look at Loongson chips. It is used on all our military and satelitte application. Even the OS is not window based on our military hardware. The American has stir the honest nest and they will pay the price for this. Look at our space station project? Did US embargo stop China space ambition? The embargo only accelerate it!

The SSD's price has dropped significantly this year, and 1TB SSD's price has dropped from $250 to $100. Do you know why? Because the 12nm chip made in China has been put into mass production.
Next is 7nm, 5nm, 3nm
In fact, the USA has done a very stupid thing. It doesn't take you 10 years to understand.

Indeed. Many forumer here has very outdated news of China technology advancement, They still stay in the times of 80s where they think US is still the best in everything.

I feel that the USA system lacks the ability to correct defects and evolve forward. Their politicians know where the problem is, but they can only divert and delay the problem, not solve it. Their politicians know it is wrong, but they will still do it for their personal political interests.
Although this country is only 245 years old, it is already like a conservative old woman.

I don't understand some nation's infatuation with "quantum radars". Been hearing it for over a decade now. At the end of the day, you are pouring billions into R&D for what purpose? Detect a few hundred stealthy aircrafts in the world? This money could be used for humanitarian purposes IMO.

What these people are failing to understand is, "stealth" is not just a fighter jet. It's a "system". In other words, if I can create a radar that can even detect perfectly, I am STILL using 1940's tech, only modified, i.e. RADIO WAVES modified for Photonic assessment!! So with the best algorithm and computation power on the backend, my source of data is my broad-spectrum RF, now optimized to bring me back a view of the electromagnetic spectrum in an object. Now, if the RF being "received" to be processed is "manipulated" on it's way back by emulation, my billions spent in quantum radar R&D will also be semi-wasted (saying semi because there are other benefits of it). This is why the advanced world is moving AWAY from the RF based solutions (no matter how advanced), and into the world of beams.

Here is a much better solution. IMO, probably invest about 30-50% of the quantum radar's budget into already existing solutions to expand the range, availability in terms of "always on", output power, enhanced imagery, and associated infrastructure of IR systems. Put AI on IR based long range sensors for ID. You can't miss any object, let alone a "stealthy" jet.

If Americans can go back to North America, I think China would prefer to spend money on trees.

Whether the Americans can stay in North or South, the Chinese still need to breathe fresh air and have a better environment in big cities compared to the dark clouds of smog about 500 million Chinese netizens breathe in. So take my post as a friendly gesture to remind you to achieve your goals, invest less and invest in a safer and cleaner environment.

You don't know this?

From 1978 to 2078, we plan to spend 100 years planting trees in the northwest. The total area is 4.069 million square kilometers, with about 530 billion trees.

Now the Mu Us desert has been destroyed by us. The desert in the northwest is decreasing rapidly.

How many trees have Americans planted? Is there 0.1%?

This is the air quality in Shanghai and New York.
I suggest you Google air quality in Chinese and American cities. The answer may be different from what you saw on Fox TV.
This is 2021, not 2011. It doesn't take 10 years for the Chinese to deal with air pollution.
