China is killing it on this chart of the world's biggest metro systems

Beijing and Shanghai's metro systems, crowded as they may be, are things to be proud of. Epic, snaking tunnels capable of carrying millions of people - billions, on an annual basis - that ask nothing more than the cheap swipe of a metro card (and maybe putting up with a bit of claustrophobia).

This chart shows how Beijing, Shanghai and other Chinese cities' metro systems stack up against the international competition.

New York may be in the lead for total number of stops, coming in at more than 400, but Beijing and Shanghai both beat the rest of the lot in track length - coming in at first and second places, at more than 100 kilometers longer than London at third place.

A bit further down the scale, Guangzhou and Chongqing break into the chart - they've still got a ways to go before they're playing with the big boys. That said, Chongqing's subway has only been operating since 2005, and Guangzhou's is under constant expansion, so perhaps they won't be the stragglers for much longer.

Beijing also comes in at the world's busiest metro, with around 3.5 billion people riding its rails in 2014. That's just shy of 10 million people per day, every day of the year. Good luck finding a seat.

. . .
All the effort and money are for Beijing and Shanghai.

The graphic is just a prove of the discrimination happened in mainland toward another regions.

The mini Guangzhou metro is the heartbreaking thing, if we see how important the city is.

This happens in every country. All major cities tend to get more developed as opposed to other "lesser" cities. I don't doubt Chinese work ethics. It's only a matter of time before other cities too catch up. China has the ability to set it right.

Wuhan will be one of the biggest!

Exactly. Wuhan had only 1 line from 2003 to 2012,only 100,000 passengers per day. But now we have 3 lines(95km, 1.3 million passengers per day, Line2 in 2012, Line4 in 2013), and this year Line3 and one intercity HSR, Line 6 in 2016 and Line 7&8 in 2017.
It's a process. Beijing had only 2 lines for several decades.
Now a lot of 2nd tier or 3rd tier cites have just opened their first or second line. Long way to go! But I am very confident, we have too many people and very high demand.

Rapid metro system is really become life line for big cities.

China really growing very fast.

In 2016 Delhi metro will have about 310 KM length and will become 7th biggest system of world.

Since we have to start from somewhere, Beijing and Shanghai are the obviously choices. We have to admit though, we cannot compete with Taiwan in this aspect. Taiwan is a democracy, they make everybody happy over there, on every decision they make, 365 days a year :toast_sign:

Good for Delhi!!
Countries like China and India need huge metro construction.
Late this year, we in Wuhan will welcome our fourth line and another intercity HSR to the airport and satellite cites.

But not sure about "7th", Wuhan has huge potential!;)

I think it may be around top10 cause we have Chongqing, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Nanjing....Huge metro construction.
And datas in that article was quite outdated.
Anyway, best wished to Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, etc.
@Ammyy And don't underestimate BRT and tramway in small cities or new districts of big cities. (don't build them in the downtown of big cities like in Ahmedabad unless BRT has independent control-access lanes)

It will only be the seventh largest if others stop growing. But that won't be the case, would it?

Untrue
Democracy and happiness dont shake hands often times
Democracy or not has nothing to do with a well-run Metro either
Taiwan HSR is on the brink of bankruptcy. Hope they can find a solution
